The longer I play, the deeper it gets

Just a few impressions from a noobie.

I am rather new to this game since I only have it a few weeks but I am impressed with its layered depth.

Let me explain. When I first played, first the demo and then the retail version, I thought it was a very nice little space Sim/adventure game. But it i so much more. The longer I play, the deeper it gets. Reputation management, a huge number of systems and so many things I haven't done and places I haven't been. The depth is amazing and it just keeps on going. Those who only play through the story line are missing out on a lot of fun.

yes Freelancer is fun especially due to the fact that it is such an expansive game. I especially enjoy it when you add mods to it which can make it a more interesting.

after a while you'll find the game rather repetitive..

then you start to download mods.

when the mods crahses your pc , you start flaming the modders...

I always thought people flamed the modders just for fun

Sure the game can be repetitive if you let it! This is true of any game you buy. But you can keep it fresh with some simple ideas, why not try some new stuff like play through SP again with a frieghter or a Light fighter (No Cheats or Mods).

Try getting all the factions neutral to you and just do trade runs with no bar missions. Or make them all hostile to you (but a few) and try to be a trader! Try making at least 1 million dollars before you begin the SP campaign! Try the SP campaign with out making any money!

Try flying ALL the different ships in the game to see which ones you like best for each class. It might come in handy for my next suggestion.

Join a server and play in MP and work on gaining allies and forming groups to help on trade runs. Or perhaps destroying a particular faction while sharing with others the experience that is Freelancer is more your style.

In short use your imagination and try different things rather than just accept the game as a shoot'em up space sim that was made with little to no different missions to do. Make up your own stuff as you go along what ever happend to that part of gaming? Do you always accept everything someone gives you just as it is?

And finally MOD your game when you feel brave enough to try a little something different outside the main stream. (just remember to back up your files in case something goes wrong with the MOD). Tell me these suggestions won't keep you busy for a while!

There are those that make things happen, those that watch things happen, and those that wonder what happened.

Just some thought from the edge of space!

Well, I've come to the opposite conclusion.

Yes, there are a number of variations you can take, factions you can become friendly with, play styles you can adopt, and even clans you can join, but in the end(not that an "end" actually exists) there's no real point. I've killed thousands, made millions, flew most of the ships, changed alliegences(sp), traded, grouped, explored, and had a few PvP encounters yet every faction is still the same as when I started, every trade route and commodity price is exactly the same as when I started, everything in the Freelancer universe exists as if I never existed. The game just seems more pointless than Quake or some other FPS game, at least they have an end with a result.

Just to clarify, I'm not posting here as a fan of a competing game(say Eve or Darkspace) and I'm not trying to start some flamewar. I played Freelancer online daily for about a month and had a lot of fun, but within the last week of playing a nagging question has been causing me pause while playing, "Why am I doing this?". The answer seems to be "None".

If the patch introduces some new elements such as a realistic economy or such I might come back to playing Freelancer, but until then I'm going back to BF1942 or try some new games.
