Similar situation, I was hauling Light arms, and the damn Bounty Hunters started shooting. So i kick it into high gear (and was surprised that they DID NOT use wasps), hit the "Z" button, turned around and started shooting the bastards. Then suddendly, a sun appeared out of nowhere while I was drifting&shooting, I hit the sun corona, got myself a nice hull breach...

back when I thought the Valkyrie was invinsible, I went over to Omega-11 and jumped a group of Sabres..unfortunately, I soon got jumped myself. From that moment on, I knew I would have to leave my beloved Valkyrie for the Hammerhead, and eventually the Eagle.

Mine was when I were traveling in the Omicron Alpha. I was ambushed by six Outcast Sabre, I managed to gunned them down with my well armed Anubis for a few second when another group of Outcast appear and joins the already crowded fight. Got my left wing torn to pieces and loosing 2 of my best guns, tried to escape with no luck. When my right wing got blown up, I goes rampage, circling around and shooting the nearest object I could found with my remaining guns.
Before I die, I managed to torpedoed an outcast in a head on collisions

I died exploring omega eleven. That place is a nightmare. Thats why I never really was allowed to expand my map.

My unusual deaths occur for 1 reason only. Stupid...farkin...auto-pilot. It may not help that my cruise is set at 1000 instead of 300, but hey 300 is just way to slow to explore in. I've run into suns, planets, bases, trade lanes and jump gates, an they all ususally end in a death cause i'm in a dagger for the moment. But the worst of all was when i was exploring in Dublin. I set the waypoints, hit go to, and lit a cig. Before i new it, my Hawk was obliterated by mines. Farkin AP didn't even try to move...

I also died while docking with a battleship and the doors slammed on me and my sheilds were down so i was crushed while some pencil neck female officer was scanning me.

A couple of Nomad ships were fighting against me, I kept getting hard hits and I died.

Getting jumped by groups of Corsairs when Im in a Freighter is my most common death

I didn't actually get killed by an NPC, a planet killed me (the autopilot slammed me straight into it)

I died early in the sp story line. Probably between mission 2 and 3 which you need to earn money to get mission 3. I was using the crap juni gave me and 3 rogues or xenos took me out of lane jump. Ive just died while their first set of attack. My last death was, i think, in the mission where you return from the prison (mission 11 ?). I hit a mine or something.

I died one more time as i remember by a mine. There was a place that surrounded by mines. (not the one van housen's friend commits suicide)

dead is common for me.i had been killed almost 100 times

My first deaths occurred in my Anubis, post-campaign, when i still thought it was the best ship around ()...Trying to find the Corsair base, having just been told they had better weapons/ships... and wading through hundreds of Red Hessians! You get to the jump holes and there are so many of them, sometimes... so you run back through. Lo and behold, MORE of them!

Sigh.

Then repeat with the Falcon...though at least with that i made it through to the sector with Sabres!

Once upon a time, during a super-fast docking manoeuver, I missed the correct row on the keyboard and pressed '3' instead of 'F3'. And so I fired first gun number 3 and then the whole ship at the planet ...

All my money was in the cargo hold and after I respawned I was left with a Rhino and 4 credits.
