Joining formation with targets

Read a post here earlier about neural net piloting when in combat. It said you could join formation with your targets, thus freeing up your mouse for targeting.
I tried this in the early missions and it worked! Later I tried to do it on some freelance jobs I picked up but it no longer works. Trouble is, it sometimes activates just by clicking on a ship when I DONT want it to happen.

Can someone clarify the secrets of targets, formations and general combat manouvers? Does anyone use this feature or do you just manually follow your targets?

I read the same. But i never succeeded in going to formation to follow my targets and thus shootin' down my enemies. Has it something to do with the fact that i am already 10th lvl? If not, how do i enable this option?

By the way: first post for me on this site, hi all. Nice site, very much information.

I've found that you can get into formation with a potential victim, but as soon as they go hostile you lose the ability. I'm not sure if you get kicked out of formation if you're already there when they switch but I think so.

So, if you're on approach to an unsuspecting target (not hostile yet) you can get in formation but once you open fire (and get past they "hey, quit shooting me" point) you'll have to give chase manually - that's the behaviour I've experienced anyway.

Yes, it is a bad pun.

It is impossible to use Formation or any other form of autopilot while in active combat. If you are in formation with someone, and you attack them, the formation will be lost. What you claim to have experienced was either a glitch, or you are simply mistaken.
