Before you give up on it entirely, have you considered using a Joystick to Mouse emulator? I've not tried this one but it should work for you.

Actually it wasn't ignorance, it was brilliance. Microsoft saw that not everyone has a joystick, but *gasp* everyone has to have a mouse.

well - I've tried before buying and, so far, am not particularly impressed unfortunately... but the controls I think are fine. After playing freelancer a while, I dragged out "Edge of Chaos" to make a comparission and found myself wondering whether I could set up Edge Of Chaos the same way as Freelancer!!! But its the other things in Freelancer I find disappointing, the repetiveness, the fact that the ship doesn't need any fuel to go places, the fact that prices don't change,... the little details that would make the game more immersive. At the moment, from first impressions, it seems so much less than it claimed to be....?

Anyway - no, I am going to hang onto the game cause I'm going to have a go at modding it to see if i can change things to the way i like them - done it before with other games and, with an already healthy modding community here, hopefully I can have some success? We'll see over the next few weeks anyhow...
