HOW DO YOU MINE if you can
Every once in a while just do a little mining for taget practice. Use your weakest weapon and be careful not to go into zones that are not friendly to you. At the lower levels it can be a great way to make a few bucks if you don't want to take on the Bar missions and mess up your rep.
I earned enough in th Dresden system to get myself a better ship and some weapons. It kept me in Nano's until I could get the best shield for my ship and I also kept doing trade missions for the loot.
Choose wisely and you can make some coins choose poorly and you wind up dead!
Just some thoughts from the edge of space!
all the news that no one reads

A very popular rumour is that you need a low damage weapon to avoid blowing up the goods when you mine, but the fact is you DON'T. I have done quite a bit of mining and I haven't noticed any difference in yield between a cheap gun and a top end gun, so the more logical thing to do is to use your SLOWEST gun so you don't fire a second shot before you know it and blow up the goods. In my case that is a Nomad Energy Cannon.

Everywhere
About those things blowing up, I noticed that sometimes the yield is next to nothing while some other time you mine the same area and every other rock has resources.
I was mining diamonds in the Von Rohe belt and getting a 1 in 5 return. A level later I returned, but the mining fun was over. No more diamonds no matter how many rocks I blew up.
Same thing with that mining field in Leipzig behind Bautzen; I never got any resources from that field.
I just wonder if there are conditions for getting resources out of mining fields.

Mining Diamonds is an excercise in futility compared to Niobium. Up in Tau-37 right near the Tau-23 jump hole, you can mine niobium, and expect at least a 50% drop rate, though usually it is 100%. Then, going over the top of Sirius, its a small 20-30 minute trip down to Dresden to sell it for 1600 a pop. Diamonds sell for 1650 at their highest rate, and the length of the run to get to New Tokyo to sell it like that, isnt worth the 20% max drop rate you'll get in Van Rohe. Mining Niobium I've filled a Dromedary in 15 minutes, then another 25ish and im 400k richer. Then, since I'm going over the top area, which takes me through kusari, I buy cheap diamonds when i get to Dresden and sell them in New Tokyo to maximize my profits.
