Why didn''t DA.........

This is a free discussion forum on Freelancer. This is the place to discuss Freelancer issues NOT covered by the other boards!

As i read more post of people saying how good Privateer and Privateer2 are it makes me think. If you love those games so much go play them. Dont play freelancer anymore DA cant please everyone no matter what game it is or how good it is your gunna have people say it was crap, it should have been better, or it needed this. Everyone knows that version 1.0 in a game is a nicer way of saying beta

That's not the right kind of attitude. Without constructive criticism, game developers will simply end up putting out exactly the same thing time after time. Would you rather that Freelancer VIII (assuming the franchise lasts that long) be exactly the same thing as this one? I don't think so.

Bottom line is it's healthy for customers to compare, discuss and critique the product they bought.

Cailin... let *me* think...
Privateer is 10 or 11 years old? Privateer 2 is 6 or 7?

Ok.

I don't go back to those games for many reasons that are obvious.

The features in those games were a great, successful model to work from. I'm surprised DA didn't take the hint. Oh well.

It's amazing when one thinks about it... A game made in 1993 that fits on just *FOUR* 1.44MB floppy disks so jam-packed and rich with gameplay features that it is still worthy of comparison to a game released 10 years later that takes up 100 times more storage space.

Makes me almost want to learn how to write code and attempt to update the darn thing with better graphics and a bigger universe.

I'd say that if it was five years in development already before MS took the place over, it was about time that someone stepped in and kicked some arse. Maybe the result isn't perfect, but better something now that wait another three years for everything to be right. And perfectionists are never happy.

This is just a guess: perhaps Chris Roberts paid his dev team by the hours? they perhaps saw no reason to hurry....

Post Fri May 09, 2003 2:41 pm

I'm happy with Freelancer, its a good fun game, but sadly its not the grand leap forward it promised to be. The DvD style case promises various different careers you can pursue... but you can't really pursue them, due to the repetitive nature of most of them, it gets dull after three or four repetitions (static economy trading? dear god...). It says you can drop out of the storyline and just explore the galaxy... well yeah you can, as long as you don't mind that irritating waypoint reminder every three minutes from Juni... And a wonderfully immersive online experience? I don't know many games where i can hit the level max in under two hours... As has been stated, when DA lost Roberts something seems to have gone wrong (M$ methinks) and it went from an immersive galactic space opera to a quake 3 clone in space... where everyone rushes to the spawn point for the BFG and sits their all day, racking up the kills.

Just as a point of interest, i am a Neverwinter Nights player, and i have found that for most of the people i play online with, FL is their "Second". I.E. if their frustrated that their NwN server is full they come onto FL and go fragging a while to vent.

We were hoping for Elite for the noughties, and got a deathmatch in space. It works as a bit of fun, but its just another reason for me to curse M$ unto the very pit of hades. Damn them for turning what could have been a fantastic game, into another Arcade blast em up to support that ailing hunk of junk they call the best console ever. I can't wait for Halo to hit the PC so we can all hop onto the X-box servers and teach them what a mouse and keyboard can do for you

Dreamcast Quake revisited anyone?

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the original post of this thread. I admire DA's efforts here, and the SP campaign was fun... But, Geez, louise... Man' The game gets boring cuz there's nothing to do anymore... There should be at least twice as many star systems, and some randomness to the game. And, if the SP campaign is going to be so (seemingly) short, the Post-SP should at least keep you interested.

I agree...

Although, if an expansion looks promising, I'll buy it...

I would have liked more interactivity with NPC's, especially after the SP campaign. I don't play MP, so no comment there. BUT, I have found things to do after the SP campaign was over, and the d**n game has kept we up WAY past bedtime on numerous occasions, so I'm going to pass it. I think a lot can be addressed in an expansion pack but no, it ain't perfect. H**l, neither am I, anymore.

You're no match for m----

Post Sat May 10, 2003 12:12 am

The only things that will be "addressed" in an expansion pack are things like more ships, more systems, and more NPC's saying the same damn thing.

Maybe there will be about 10-15 single player missions and more Juni. but as far as anything else is concerned..

It will be the same, but more of it.

The bottom line is... they could have delivered a hulking double blow to the game industry, but instead it's a peaceful giant.

DA had their chance to bring us a privateer 3.. They had the biggest friggin chance to do what they promised. And instead they gave us another StarFox... with cargo ships... and humans..

You know.. I have been keeping track of this game since it was first announced.. hell, even prior to that. This was supposed to be the king mother of all spacetrade/combat/sim s. Who remembers reading those reports from the developers.. who said (loosely quoted)

"Basically if you see it, you will be able to fly to it."

or

"All NPC's will have their own distinct characteristics.. "

"There will be many side-line missions each with their own sub-plots, much like (what's his name) from New Detroit or (what's her name) from Perry Naval Base."

"The Neural Net will navigate your ship.. you can upgrade your neural net to give you more features in combat/trading as you get richer.. you may also choose to fly the ship on your own, but this will be unnecessary for most of the game."

"Dynamic trading will feature fluctuationg supply/demand of commodities.."

And so forth. remember statements like those?

It would have been cool as hell if all the systems were rolled into one "playground" instead of seperated into different "playgrounds.." . This would help freelancer feel bigger and more immersive. Nothing sucks like seeing a "loading" logo flash everytime I jump. Hell.. i wish you could upgrade jump drives.. what for? i dont know. I liked the original idea of upgrading all aspects of your ship.. and character..

i miss the idea of having sub-plots and stories within stories.. dealt by the bajillinos of NPC's that were supposed to have unique personalities..

bah.

If they had spent those 5 years being fully productive.. even during the years before that when they were done with P2:TD... I'm sure they could have *EASILY* included the features they touted for so long..

BAH anyway im ranting.. im out of steam now.

Post Sat May 10, 2003 11:30 am

In the expansion...

I DON'T want new ships

I DON'T want new systems

I only wish they made the enhancements stated in this thread and the many others stated in other threads around the forum. Remember, it's not too late now to send in a list of our wishes. If an admin from around here sent them a list, from such a big and respected community as TLR, they may just listen to at least SOME of our wishes. So, admins, why don't you send in a list? I'll even collect the best ideas for you if you guys are too lazy .

BTW, I don't hope I sound too arrogant or anything, I just want this game to be greater then it already is.

Post Sat May 10, 2003 1:46 pm

Could they put a option where you can be a space racer?

it's just that there's only one chane you get to race...

and if you could be a racer, then it would be better to have engines upgrade nad such.

......................................................................................

I think this is kinda off-topic, but i cant start a new topic in the forums about this.

P.S. Very Sorry For My Terrible English.

"What am I to do in a universe so vast?"

Post Sat May 10, 2003 2:21 pm

As I've said before.. realistically..an expansion would most likely include more ships, more systems and more SP missions. Maybe include more commodities.

Suggestions like...

Owning battlecruisers
Taking over Stations
Hiring wingmen
Real NPC's that dot the universe offering sub storylines and sub-plots
A Dynamic Trade Model
More ship upgrades
Different ship speeds

etc.

These are suggestions for a completely new game. DA already decided NOT to include these features.. I'm sure they could have.. but they didn't. Why? primarily to port the game to X-Box, but also to appeal to action/1st person shooter fans and not space simmers who were into Wing Commander/Privateer/Elite/FreeSpace/StarLancer/whatever. 1st person games are the hottest thing out.. Space sims "died" with the masses long ago. This fills the niche, bridging the two together..

We will have to wait until FE4 comes out.. I doubt DA will make another FreeLancer style game that isn't freelancer. I doubt they will release an expansion that changes everything about the game. Hope and pray all you want kids.. but this is it.

Well, Microsoft did what they had to do to get the game out of the door, playable and with working single player missions.

As for "Radar, engine, power plant (supply power to guns) upgrades are all moddable and won't take you more than a few hours to put back into the game. They are all there already even with the appropriate .ini files, but somehow DA didn't bother putting in the last few hours of work and instead gave every ship a default radar, engine and power plant in the initial ship purchase package and left it as that."

What that means is that all of those things can be added seamlessly into an expansion pack. I'm hoping they do one, Freelancer is still on CGA's top ten list for the year (just saw the new CGA this morning).

For years I looked for a game I actually enjoy playing other than my soccer management sims. I've bought many many games and they end up under the computer desk, either unplayable or boring. I went looking for earth and beyond but during the 5 trial came accross so many patch problems it was frustrating from the get go. I told my local software etc exactly what I wanted from a game, playable, fun, interesting, exploration, some level of interaction, trading, fighting, space setting (like the triangular ship, no color, old elite) - they in turn recommended Freelancer - I can play it, I'm no master gamer, it's fun and there's a lot to talk about in the game otherwise there would not be many tousands of posts on hidden objects, guns, ships, systems etc. Yes I agree that maybe there are things that would make it better .... but I think it's already great in its current form. I refuse to mod it until I've at least covered every inch of the systems and tried everything. Take it for what it is and have fun. If DA enhance it great, if they just add more of the same well that will still be a bonus.

If you throw enough mud ..some's gonna stick.
