Lvl 38 game over! NOT!

Hello all.

Freelancer sits nicely between 2 different types of space games. On the on side you have Elite and XBTF and on the other you Xwing and Wingcommander style games.

So its natural Freelancer will attract both types of fans.

Im a fan both but prefer Elite/X style game generally and its my experience in that side of this genre id like to speak about here. If your a leveler, then as soon as you reach level 38 the game is over. End of story. However if your en elite style player the game goes and this why.

Elite/X style players create their own adventures in the universe, they seek out fun instead of waiting for it to appear on their doorstep as happens in the single player campaign. This means levels really dont matter, neither does the owning the strongest ship because sometimes its fun to take on outcasts in a light fighter so they do that.

They go exploring, they annoy one faction for a few days then make up with them and go do something else. They try the game as pirates, as police as traders all from the same save, taking the time to build up their rep with a hostile faction so they can see what its like from that side of the fense.

They may decide they hate Deep space engineering and set out to destroy all their stations when they feel like some serious action or they may just decide taking a slow freight from Berlin to Omega is the way to go today.

The point is, if you are just making money, fighting, buying the best ship and leveling the game will soon become boring. However if you try and do everything, you have months of entertainment a head of you.

Just my opinion.

You can't destroy stations.
Playing the "other side of the fence" is exactly like this side.

Shoot stuff, fall asleep while traveling the trade lanes or go make and eat dinner while traveling outside trade lanes, shoot more stuff, fall back asleep......then eventually realize there really is nothing to do and go play a fun game instead.

Guys your wingcommand sort of fan then ?

My point here is, you can do anything, all you need is a little imagination.
The sort of games that keep the action coming at you constantly as part of the plot always end but they usually dont let you keep playing like freelancer & XBTF do. Players fo X learnt a long time ago to go and see whats out there. find a spot, draw a line in space and make that area yours for a while. Then take you goods to some distant highly profitable system and sell them lot before declaring war on the split before launch time.

Imagination, thats all it takes.

Having a plot hold your hand all the way through game doesnt require any imagination and doesnt encourage users to go look and seek out the action for them selfs.

For instance, when was the last time you when to for a fly around a the Omega systems just to find wrecks and suddenly decide how much you hate outcasts after doing so. I dont know about you, but one plan i excuted was to go to berlin, buy a big ship, fly back and kick their butts before buying a trading vessel and running hfuel for while. Then i went diamond hunting for a bit.

How far do you want to take this line Gis?

Using imagination playing a dice n board game is interesting. In fact why play a game at all, just sit in a darkened room with your 'imagination' it'll also keep you entertained for hours You ever thought that some people have differing levels of 'imagination', some may not even want to 'imagine' at all and have there gaming experience served up to them? Freelancer is a nice journey up until level 38, but after that I agree with a lot of the points Hand Solo made. Even this could be forgiven, in my opinion, if the multiplayer option was better and allowed the formation of clans and human v human conflicts so some leagues could be started, but no all we have is basically coop... and once you've reached level 38 online, well err, no need to repeat what's already been said.

Well about the clan part, I'm nearly finished making a mod that allows clans, although you have to join/make a clan on my webpage (Not giving the site out, since as of yet it still isn't complete.) I'll register the clan on my mod, and you may recall that when you start a game, you have the "Navy" tag on your name, it's set up like that, and via the site, you can change alliances with other clans, which I will update the mod once again to activate hostility to the other clans, or activate allies, (The little green or red target reticle around your enemy.) but, my mod won't be finished for about another week, I'm still working on allowing it to create buildings, or request a clan base somewhere and I'll place it there, the bases will have an extremely high amount of defences and hitpoints.

"Yeah hello[! I'd like to report this taxi driver.."
"And his name is?"
"Jam.. the symbol for Boron.. and a weird q surrounded by dots.."
"You sure it was Boron and not manganese?"
"Ofcourse I'm sure, I had the periodic chart with me at the time.." -.-

-Lucifa-,

That's great news!

You may just have saved Freelancer's online multiplayer experience for me and many others. I'm looking forward to trying this mod of yours. It sounds like you're doing what DA couldn't do. Respect dude.

i agree with Gisgard. This game is what you make it. Players race to level-up and get the next big thing. Then they get bored when they have it. I don't play to level up and max-out my ship specs or weapons, i play to compete on my terms. Imagaination is required, and it upsets those who want more content because they are poor at mapping out their own plays. Finished Freelancer? Well become a merchant. Become a fully fledged pirate... play the hero, the cop or just roam free and try and discover a many secrets as possible. I think the AI in the game is great and creates a very real, busling universe. I can sometimes just enjoy flying around and soaking up the ambience of interstellar-flight.

One approach to study "optimal" combinations and ships and weapons. I'm currently working on the Dagger. Anyoone know if there is an Advanced Stunpulse turret in the game?

Thans Merc.

I think Hengis has distorted the meaning of my post a lot but I see you understand it perfectly.

If Hengis wants to know what my imagination is doing in Freelancer he should check out the Hostile Universe V2 mod in the mod announce forum. I am fortunate enough to not only enjoy the game as it is but I know what else id like to do in it and have the ability to add it into the game my self.

Though i believe my mod is best suited to people with some imagination as it is designed with that in mind because thats the way i play. Still lots to do though to get it to the point I wanted to take it too.

I've set myself targets to go treasure hunting and find every wreck available, I'm also gonna become fully friendly with every faction at some point within my one saved game. Just setting yourself some difficult long term targets adds a lot of fun and time onto the game. Once i've finished these i'm gonna try to get to do a round tour of the Sirius sector in a Liberty light fighter!!
My brother is like many of the "levellers" who race through the game, he enjoys it loads, but he's now on his 3rd replay thru the storyline unable to get much more fun out of it after. Whereas, I'm still on my original save game, exploring at my own pace.

BTW Hand Solo, you might not be able to blow up their bases but you can still take all of their turrets out just to embarass them

I agree with Gis, some people are bored throughout the whole game others look foreward to the expansion pack and still others think it is too cool to be able to just kick back and enjoy the view out the window.

Personally I like to explore every sector to it's fullest and I have almost every faction neutral right now. That's not to say I don't get jumped once in a while leaving a base that is just on this side of nuetral. "Well look what I found, OK you've got just one chance drop it and you just might live!" I love to hear them scream when you hit cruise as you dump and then hit B just before you leave! "Hey my cargo!" LOL

I went back to that base latter and blasted everything that flew out of it for about an hour took their turrets off and watched as their "fighters" flew into their own mine field and blew up one after the other in their haste to leave because " I'm outta here their just too strong right now" BOOOOOOM, LOL.

Remember you get out what you put in if you like it great if not then that's ok too some will continue to explore others will explore another game.

Just some thoughts from the edge of space!

Both sides have made good points. Ihave finished the SP, reached lvl 38, and searched out all the wreaks. I have wandered tne universe till I can say that I've
been to every system in the game. I love this game. Having said that, I also want more. This game could have been so much better, just have Juni call up every 7 or 8 levels and ask if you want to take on a mission for her. Not a
requierment, but an option. Ido have to say I've been trying out all the MOdz,
and I am very impressed with the work some of you have done, keep up the good
work. The modders have prolonged the enjoyment of this game greatly. I am now starting the SP over W/ Michal D.s rebalance mod. I can't wait for the
expansion.

first of all im not a leveler, im nearing level 38 coz those #$@%& outcasts keep anoying me and i have to blow them up... i keep on flying around making new friends/enemies, getting better and better stuff but ALL THE MISSIONS ARE THE SAME!!!
i really liked x-beyond the frontier but there you could upgrade everything, actually buy your own bassed and build up your own economy. also something nice of xbtf is that your ship could be a freighter AND a fighter (with the power of a heavy and the agility of a light) at the same time...
im exploring away but there are few places i havnt been and almost noone i cant take on... i take out half a dozen corsairs with a light fighter and sell their loot for some more credits but i dont get to spend those credits becouse there is nothing worth while buying...
i agree that imagination helps but only to a point.

I think some of the people complaining about Freelancer should go and play Splinter Cell for the 8 hours it takes to beat it and, with no incentive whatsoever to reply, tell me which gaming experience offers you more? Real-time shadows or real-time universe? I prefer the latter. Even if it's far from perfect it's still given me far more gameplay than any other game for the last year or so... with the exception of Morrowind and X-Tension. X-Tension is an awesome space-sim, but one thing Freelancer does better is the feeling of being "out there, somewhere" lost in the middle of the universe. Imagination is always a plus with any game you play really. Freelancer probably benefits more than most. For the last 20 hours of play I haven't even taken a mission from anyone - I make my own, if you get my drift.
