Question about rear gun points?

I just got a heavy fighter and noticed one of my guns is in the back. How the heck are these used? When you fire, you fire forward. The rear gun cannot point forward. Is the rear gun mount for some kind of auto gun, that automaticly shoots at the enemy behind you? I havn't seen any auto guns in the game yet.

The rear-facing turret hard point is for a rear-facing turret. If you hit the look behind button, you can aim and fire any turrets you have that can face rearward. This is of no use IMHO on a fighter (on which only that one weapon can fire rearwards), but in the large freighters a good portion of your turrets can turn all the way around to fire behind you.

I suppose it could be of some use..if you would, for one reason or another, want to fly straight forward while firing backward. Although I, too, would say it's utterly useless.

When you're _running_away_. That's the only real time for them. When I'm on a time sensitive MOX run from LD-14 to Rio Grande, and I don't have time to smite some corsairs who decided it would be fun to jack my lane, I just cruise on and go into turret mode. Rear view is pretty limited, IMHO.
