I have heard so many references to how great the older game X Beyond the Frontier is that I found a new copy on the net for $13 US. Would it be worth it, or would it be too dated by today's standards? I mean it only came out in 1999---how dated could it look?
video and pc game of old are coming back. sony and nintendo alone have revisited a few of the older titles and some pc games as well have poped up on these systems. video games are like wine man.

The answer to your question is kind of. If you were able to get a hold of the expansion, X-Tension, then I would say yes without hesitation. The original is cool, but starts off very slowly. You can only own one ship (granted you can customize it like crazy), and it does give you a good idea how X games generally work. Trading, owning factories, so one and soo forth.
The expansion (also available in the X-Gold package), allows the game to fully realize its potential and eliminates a lot of the annoying aspects of the original. In the expansion, you can own and fly any number of ships. You can control them remotely through a great onboard computer setup. While there isn't a story per se, there are a lot of random missions in the game. The biggest weakness of the series is the ship to ship combat. It isn't great, but it's not disgustingly bad either.
Bottom line is that X2 (the sequel) will be coming out sometime soon. For that price, it might be worth it to check out the original to get ready for the sequel.

I replayed X a few weeks ago while looking forward to freelancer
The mission / plot is a bit thin, and you can only fly 1 ship, but the trading is much better. You can own and build your own stations. When there is a lot of an item in stock the price goes down. So if a station has 20,000 energy cells in stock you don't get a good price because they don't need it. You have to use a lot more intelligence to find good trade routes rather than doing the same thing all the time.
Also you can go anywhere and spend days exploring without even starting the plot, instead of FL where you can only go certain places.
It relies more on trading than on combat but for $13 I'd say give it a try. It will last at least as long as FL although its looking a bit old now.
Freelancer with complete freedom and X's trading system would be an awesome game. If the missions were a lot harder you would have to spend a long time looking for good upgrades before you could survive the battles.
Anyway, all IMHO.
