hvis you've played both, you get the sense (I did anyways) of wasted potential....
EVE have things FL lacks and the other way around... hehe I'm just never satisfied =)

EVE will probably appeal more to casual gamers (as most MMORPGs do).

It might, but I doubt it. Casual players don't normally go for PVP games with harsh death penalties.

true, but i still dont think anyone would leave FL for EVE (although some might play both)

Actually, I think Freelancer appeals to common gamers. They read the requirements, and find out no joystick needed. Bonus right there.
No one will leave Freelancer for EvE. They will leave Freelancer after everything is explored and everything has been done before.

I thought OddJob had a good explaination of FL as we know it before MODS.

I bought it when it first came out and I am still exploring all the systems looking for the elusive jump hole or missing ship. (I don't look up cheats spoils the experience).

FL has faults but as far as an overall game it rocks. I have played many a space sim and find this one to be really good at one particular thing.

You can pick it up any time and play it!

I spend a lot of time away on the road. When I get some time to play I don't want to have to "re-learn" all the moves to win in a space battle.Nor do I want to figure out how, or where I left the economy of a particular system. I do know about dynamic trading but it is kinda nice to just put in the disk pick a destination and go have some fun. All the player stats tell me what I need to know or do. I even leave a note in the save game just so I know where I was when I left last.

I know a lot of you will dis-agree with this attitude but think about it how many times have you had to leave a game for a while due to whatever. By the time you get back you might as well start all over from the begining as you are getting your A** kicked because you can't remember a certain move or where a particular area you need to go is or whatever makes it difficult to get through.

I am not saying I like all my gaming experience to be this way for sure I have some very difficult games that require you to stay on top of them lest you loose your edge. Just sometimes it is nice just to be able to PLAY.

And no I don't play online or MORPGS or any other acronyms of online players I agree why would I want to deal with the very people I am trying to escape!

Just some thoughts from the edge of space!

I have another question.. will people abandon freelancer for "X2 the threat" when it comes out?

I'm not trying to say I hate freelancer or love X2, but this is just a curious question.

did he say monthly fee!?!?
that = big no no

There are a couple other things about EVE that I did happen to find interesting.
1) Trade is not simply dock and sell - you have to find people that actually want to buy your items from you. Talk about dynamic economy!
2) You can eject from your craft when in trouble but if your life pod is destroyed as well then you become a corpse in space with which can be collected as bonus trophys and sold as well
3) Boasts 5,000 star systems - and we thought FL was big!
4) Has occasional epic events such as exploding stars, etc.
These are some of the features that attract me to EVE, but like I said before, the subscription fee is a bit too high.

I am also a tester in EVE. And most admitt after having gotten hold of FL I can see that it offers alot. But EVE then again is also offering alot. Like it was said that if they ever were an hybrid of FL and EVE tears would definitly becoming to my eyes.

I dont agree that EVE is for the casual gamers. You need to be able to spend some time in making you Char/avatar better than he/she is from the start. But one of the better things in EVE is that it's realtime all the time (like all others MMO's I know that.) But this is the first game in this area I have tryed and truly taken a liking to. I was always against the P2P system. But then I met some fellows online, joined their corp, and after a little time I started to see that it offerd more than just you monthly payment. To me I think I have gotten some "penpals" online that I can see nearly when ever I am on.

And a final note about P2P is that it is cheaper than going to a bar/cafe/disco or what ever to meet your freinds ofcourse it may not be as much fun as drinking you brains out, but hey guess what I dont touch that stuf anyways so there

But in EVE you can't make MODS yourself. In FL you can add mods to add the things you miss from the game yourself, either mods other ppl made or learn to mod yourself.

I'm already planning to make a few mods for myself ^_^

As soon as I have the time to learn how..

You know, X2 might draw people away from Freelancer but so what? Every popular game has it's time in the sun so another game replacing Freelancer as the must have space game is inevitable. Any game has a limited top tier shelf life and will eventually end up on the bargain rack. That's ok though, it makes way for the new titles and keeps the genre fresh.

In my case though, while I'm fascinated with X2, if it attempts to bring too much realism to the game I'll lose interest. I certainly would never consider supporting the game without playing a demo first. The space sim genre simply has too bad a record, for my taste, for me to ever consider buying that kind of a game sight unseen.

True you wont be able to make mods in eve, but that keeps the cheaters out and sense of adventure in - no fun in finding your own items. Plus, when you mod up some 5,000 star systems for FL - let me know.

One thing about the mods. If a person makes a mod, like the way were doing here, theyre usually not as professional. More bugs, and problems like such. Patches, or updates, are done better by the game developers.

I have actually played eve-online beta, and its not all that it is made out to be. In my honest opinion, I prefer freelancer.. It looks better, plays better and has a much better feel.

Its just a pity Freelancer is fairly easy to level up on and could also do with a more variety of None player character ships. *example, battle ships escorting heavy convey ships etc.*

I think though ill be stuck on freelancer for a long time to come .

Well, IMO, I dont discriminate against any game simply because of its genre, and you know what, i cant stand people who groan about monthly fees, first of all, 13 bucks a month is not bad, AT ALL, unless, like most people apparently are notorious cheapskates. And then theres those, who, in their simplistic and narrow minded ways dont realize what their paying for and make a scene out of it, your PAYING to play on THEIR servers, which THEY maintain, they constantly add content and repair the game, you get live in-game support, and the world are HUGE in magnitude and population, and about people, most people say peeps on MMOG's are assholes most of the time, not true, i have at least 5 real life friends i have met on a mmorpg, and good friends too, under no circumstance do you need to interact with anyone, albeit it somewhat evades the point of a MMOG, you still arent required to, and besides, people arent that bad on MMOG's anyway, if it DOES get that bad, not even the oldest of MMOG's dont have a ignore list, so its really nothing major.

There is NO WAY, WHATSOEVER you can tell how good a game is by its genre, i barely ever have time to play games, and im past the point where im going around telling myself "oh, its a mmog, it sucks ass, i just wont buy it, its a mmog for god sakes" and about investing alot of time into it to get good at it isnt in the least bit true. I used to play freelancer EVERY single minute of time i had, but a week ago, after i bought Dark Age Of Camelot (MMOG) i been hooked to that ever since, i havent even THOUGHT of playing anything else except the Expansion for it which im buying tommorow, in no way does it take any more time for me than for example freelancer, for DaoC i only have roughly 2 hours or less PER day, and i still managed to get my character high enough to buy great stuff, kill big things, and still manage to use equipment that is of incredible power. It really all depends on what game you choose, just a word of advice, dont let the glossy veneer of the word GENRE fool you, trust me, its been many times i have mistaken a game for how great it is because of its genre. I never expected to play MULTIPLAYER at all, REGULAR, not mmog, and look where i am now, just give it a shot, and dont let anyone tell you a game sucks just cause its a certain genre, even one you dont like, i mean, i hated FPS but still fell in love with unreal tournament, keep that in mind for the future, as for EvE, it looks interesting, ill give it a shot, but chances are im staying with DaoC for a while. btw, for those who ask where there moneyes going when u pay monthly, i dont know if this is enough, but next month, a FREE EXPANSION to all players of DaoC will be released that allows you to build your own castles, houses, and adds 2 huge new housing continents. besides the usual and actually fairly big additions with every patch, keep that in mind next time someone says "why pay extra every month to play"
