well, as i said, im not really a fan of the humpback (the armor in the dromedary iis plenty, as i rarely die with enough batteries and bots) but i just stated that counter arguement because it was one that i can picture fans of the humpback saying. but i agree with you Gnavpot, why would you need extra armor, when the dromedary has enough?

Thanks Godspeed you reaffirmed my understanding that as human beings (you are human right?) LOL,we sometimes think way too much.

Yes my argument could have some counter points and other points to be sure. But after doing something like 150 hours on this game I have tried a lot of ships out (just because I could) and I think that the Drone or Dromedary have a lot of the same attributes. Armor, Weapons, Speed.

Of course as I have said before you just cant beat storage space for your stuff to make a buck. It might not seem like a lot at the time but 1 cent times 100 is another buck in the till.

Just some thoughts from the edge of space.

I only skimmed this thread so disregard this post if something like this was said earlier on this thread. I believe that the Dromedary is the best because it has the extra cargo space. As said earlier your not going to be purposely going into combat are you? So therefor you don't need the extra hull protection and etc... But I do understand the fact that you might be attacked by pirates and in that case if your using the dromedary just run for your life and make sure you have a lot of countermeasures. Relating to what was said earlier in this thread; If you want more cargo space then get the dromedary but if you want to keep your cargo better protected which should be the number one priority for a freighter in my opinion then go with the humpback. Which freighter do i use? Guess..... the dromedary.

Tell you what, friends, the Clydesdale looks the coolest. I know it gets outdated quickly but check this out---

Gee, my Clydesdale looks
awesome. A shell for a hull

I also have the Humpback . Why? it has lots of cargo and it has more protection then the drom. I like it and i doesnt bother me that it moves slow . Like said before , i hit the goto or dock button and i change to turret vieuw. While running you sometimes hit more then you think. Btw if you dont have counter droppers ... USE YOUR AFTERBURN AND BUY A ADVANCE TRUSTER

Can't imagine that the Dromedar, with its weak armor, would stand a chance in hostile border lands, as between Rheinland and Kusari (the diamond route), or if you don't have the Bundshu and the Red Hussars (? - may get the spelling tangled, was some time ago when I last did trade runs) on your side. I mean its difficult enough with the Humpback.

But, alas, I didn't try, so I'll try the Dromedar and see for myself

PS. Man, anyone who's trying to **** me with telling me that they beat a [group of Sabres or Titans with a Dromedar is a freaking ****ing liar (or their systems are way to slow for the AI to handle all traffic). [DELETED PART, actually the Dromedar is even better than the Humback in any of the more hostile areas. Mission Level 36? What are you talking about? Against what opponents? Astroids of that difficulty? Bull ****! A dromedar wouldn't stand a chance agains a [group of Hammerheads, or Stilettos,or Eagles, etc. Even less would it have the chance against a Sabre or Titan. As evasive as those maneveurs are, two hits, and you're toast (and I think that you'll have numerous encounters on your way between mission points)!!! Spend probably all the money on repairs, or? Changed the game file so that you have unlimited shield? Okay, next you'll be telling me that you can take out Nomads with a Dromedar...
[note: okay, I'll not rule out the impossible, but it still makes it hard to believe

Who said that they beat Titans in a Dromedary? I just re-read the thread and I didn't see it. Anyway, I don't think the Humpback has a chance against any of those ships either. I generally can't even survive in Rheinland in a Humpback.

I tried a freighter for the first time yesterday (humpback) and they're not for me. I had five outcasts chasing me in their frigging stilettos every time I got out of the jump hole. Fighting them was useless because of the massive turning circle and I couldn't get away from them either because despite dropping counter measures like hell, those cruise disruptors kept hitting me. And in turret view they would still hammer the crap out of me. I guess I need to get friendly with a lot more factions first before trying that again, but I was virtually kissing my Anubis after I loaded up the previous save game .
I guess the only way that freighters will work for me is if there's a way to steer them a bit more than just the strafe while in turret view.

The other freighters don't turn like that... the Humpback is an exception even for a freighter.

Order Agent, to answer your questions:

I am running Freelancer on an Athlon 1200 with a Geforce 2 MX400 and 3/4 GB RAM. Even though this system is not new, it is still well above the requirements for the game.

Some mission data and results can be seen here (converted to jpg to save bandwidth):
http://home3.inet.tele.dk/aolesen/screen4.jpg (difficulty 35)
http://home3.inet.tele.dk/aolesen/screen5.jpg (difficulty 35)
http://home3.inet.tele.dk/aolesen/screen7.jpg (difficulty 35)
http://home3.inet.tele.dk/aolesen/screen8.jpg (difficulty 36)

Opponents were mostly Class 9 ships on these missions. I have on other occassions beaten Sabres. Cannot remember if I have beaten Titans.

After a level 35-36 mission I need a lot of repair - at least when I survive.

After normal travelling in hostile border world systems I am not repairing much - mostly radiation damage.

I have not modded the game. I use a normal Class 6 Graviton shield.

I will not claim next that I have killed Nomads. I have already claimed it, since you cannot complete SP without encountering a lot of Nomads.

If you have any other questions, I will be glad to answer.

hey man, you can kill saber or titan with dromedary (with lots of nanobots, mines, missile and shield batt). Especially if it is one on one.

Even if there are 8 of them, you can still survive, if there are friendlies around.

However, killing Hammerhead or Eagle is hard..very hard.. but it can be done (with lots of nanobots, mines, missile and shield batt)

Nomads?..well..that's even harder since you don't have the pummeling power.

Just get the rigth shield, and the rigth guns for your enemies cause you raelly have to push your envelope.

Trent : uhh[!..No?..
Juni : Well I did. Babble..babble..bla..bla..bla..
Trent : (Ok...ok.. do I get to sleep with you or not?)

The Humpback can take a heavier set of guns and shields and has lots more armour, but it handles like such a pig that sometimes it can't dock with stations. The autopilot keeps trying to line the ship up but the turning radius is so wide that it keeps missing. If you're under attack that extra armour don't last long.
I've flown them both quite a bit and like the Dromedary much more.

Give me my one hump camel! It's pretty nimble and holds a whole bunch of goods and packs a strong punch. All factors important to me because I am a freebooter. That's right folks you will find my Dromerdary lurking around trade lanes in Rhineland. Picking off choice cargoes and stomping Banshees. I tried this in a fighter but the teensy amont of cargo you can get made me feel guilty about shooting a freighter for such little harvest. I have flown the Dromerdary through the sp campain and found out that it can pack a deadlier punch then the Aunbis, at that point in the SP campain. I have also flown it to the land of the ripper mines. Granted at the higher levels you have to pick when to fight carefully. I have tried the Humpback lots O armor but it turns like a sow. The Clysdale is cool but just cant hold enough. The Drone is nimble but just gget popped like a tick. So give me a one humper. Oh Yes, while we are doing Hakiu....

Like I said before the Humpback flies like she looks fat and pregnant.

Drom or even Drone (a lot less cargo space is it's downfall) fly clean and fast. I was suprised at how almost nimble these two freighters were. Yes there are others but really try flying them all and you will see matching cargo capacity and manuverability is a tough chore.

Remember a freighter is not a fighter and you will live to deliver your cargo.

I personally like to have the best mines money can buy. drop off as many as you can afford and see the carnage appear behind you. Advance counter measure, and the best thruster also helps.

When the enemy is upon you do the studder step mode of using thruster and engine brakes it throws off their aim and they miss a lot.

Also by not using your cruise engines they can be made to use up their thrusters as not many I have encoutered can keep up with the advanced thruster for any length of time.

The AI won't go to cruise and won't fire cruise disrupters unless you try to escape useing the cruise engines. While I admit it is a bit of work to accomplish, you can get some space between you and them, and then hit cruise and escape with your cargo and hide intact.

Just some observations from the edge of space!
