My best advice is not to take jobs!

this is how i made my money:

1. buy a Rhino, if u cant afford it, take some jobs, but only a few!
2. Go to Pueblo Station in colorado and buy as much Pueblo Station Jump Gate / Trade Lane Parts: $ 140. Then u go to the Hokkaido system and visit the Chugoku Gate Construction Site, its a bit hard to find but follow the "unfinished tradelane" and u'll get there... when u the visit the station u can sell ur cargo for $ 1120... thats a lot of money!!
3. keep on doing this and find new trade routes!

ps. H-FUEL and Light Arms are very effective...

Well what i found good was getting alot of shield bats and going to omega 11 and mine for diamonds in a frieghter.
Then just take them to new tokyo for $1650 a pop x 250 or whatever gets you $412,500 then take something from new tokyo to solarius in omega 11. After a few of these runs you get a couple million dollars.

Shooting the H-Fuel storage depots at Baltimore shipyard and selling at Buffalo is also fast moeny.

H-FUEL must be one of the best... Honshu area have cheap H-FUEL and the sell it at cortez.... long way but much money!

Spoilers. And there are a ton of money-making schemes already there.

Try this....

Take Beryllium from the Cambridge Mining Facility and take them to The Ring in New Berlin. It's a nice straight forward route that should not take too long to reach (20-30 mins). You should make around 250K profit per run if you are in a Humback.

Then take Engine Components from The Ring and sell them at Planet Cambridge and make another 250K profit.

A nice run back and forth, before long you will have millions in the bank.

Well, a criminal trade route that works well for me is from Cadiz Base (Omega 5) to Rochester Base (New York) and back again, Buy Artifacts from Cadiz, and bring them to Rochester, sell them and buy Light Arms, bring those back to Cadiz, and that should earn you about 110k with only 45 cargo, that is, if you don't die on the way through Omega 5 through either of the minefields.. And mind you, I am friendly with every criminal faction, so I'm not counting on getting attacked by the criminals around any of the Omega's.. Although I do get attacked by everything else... -.-

Two good, legal, trade routes that I like are the diamond run and the niobium run. Buy diamons from the Bautzen station in Dresden (about $320 per unit) and sell them on Planet Leeds, Leeds (for $1275), then buy niobium from the Holman Outpost in Tau 31 ($290?) and sell on Leipzig Station in Dresden ($1600). This return run can net over half a million credits in the bigger freighters, but it is a long trip.
Also, some of the outer systems pay up to $25,000 for the random missions, but the tend to be quite hard.

my favourite trade route is quite a long one, but with large profits. Buy gold from Leeds, and take that to New Berlin. There you buy Diamonds, to sell in New Tokyo. From New Tokyo fly to Honshu, and buy Optronics, which I take to cambridge. Buy diamonds in Cambridge and take them back to Leeds. Repeat until you are rich.
