cheating

I have been playing the one player game and fancied a game online with a guy I know - he send me a file called a TRAINER. It was a cheat that I am not at all interested in using, but as he had barely played online and had a working cheat (yes it worked online too) how common is this? I will not play online if there is cheating like this.

weener...weener...weener....

Some people use drugs on the road. Heck, there are those of them who drink and drive and then kill people. Doesn't make you stay at home right?..

Don't forget that there are people out there who don't even have the facility to play online...

..and I just wonder, where do I buy one of those?...

I like to cheat sometimes, but never online. Did he tell you to use the trainer online? did he use the trainer online? perhaps it's just for personal, SP use. Don't be too quick to judge.

Either way, cheating online is a way of life... it sucks, I know, but there's not much any of us can do other than tracking them down and banning them, and the law is always one step behind the cheaters.

I don't think you should give up on online play yet. Just get used to it and help counter cheating by reporting it to your server admin.

OMG is this game just played by imature idiots?

I was asking how common cheating is as I would rather not play if it is so rife. A player that I know had a working cheat after having the game for two minutes and before he has even played online...that is sad. So please read threads - I said the guy was a friend and yes he did use cheat online...I don't give a toss if ppl use drugs etc - I don't want to play if ppl are cheating that was one of the saddest analagies I have ever seen from someone who clearly has no undestanding of life. I have played online games for years and never seen a good new game with such easily obtainable cheats online.

- There is no cheat-protection in Freelancer beyond having the character files stored on the server
- Cheats are rampant
- Cheats have been known to crash servers badly
- Cheats have been known to corrupt non-cheaters' character files
- Cheating griefers galor!
- FL lacks useful server tools, so there's little server admins can do to detect a cheater
- Some server admins are in witch-hunt mode and are banning players for "cheating" with little cause at all

You may want to steer clear of FL online at the moment if you can't stomach sharing the internet with a lot of cheaters. DA is currently working on a patch to clean the cheating problem up a bit, but:

- unless a game is entirely server-side, which leads to extremely poor game performance, it can never be entirely cheat-proof.
- the only hope with any game is that the cheating be infrequent enough as to only be an occasional and brief nuisance

So if your goal is a cheat-free game you may not want to play anything online. However if your goal is a game that just isn't rampant with cheaters then once the patch comes out you may want to give the situation another appraisal and see if the problem hasn't gotten better (that's my plan, anyhow).
