Ship manueverability discussion/measurement
I have seen several questions regarding ship maneuverability stats. I had not seen a posting of the actual numbers and I was interested in this as well. So, I sen out to make some measurements in the meantime.
The test : 5 complete 360 degree turns. First get a stopwatch of some kind. Then launch to space and make sure you are in view of a good marker such as a star. Cut your engines and initiate a turn with the mouse pegged against the edge of the screen. Time five complete turns in one direction using the passage of the marker against the edge of the screen.
Speed = 1800 / time
Here are the results I got with the ships I have access to. Quite interesting.
51 deg/s Rhino FR
95 deg/s Starflier LF
62 deg/s Startracker LF
92 deg/s Patriot LF
72 deg/s Defender HF
69 deg/s Dagger LF
69 deg/s Cavalier LF
62 deg/s Crusader HF
97 deg/s Drake LF
Subsequently I saw Jason Merrill's 4/1/03 posting at gamefaqs.com
http://db.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/ ... ncer_b.txt
In which he lists the approximate turn speed for a number of ships. My numbers agree very closely to his though I have no idea what his methodology was.
It would be great if you guys could test the ships you can access and add them to the list or check the results that Jason and I got. Or, if someone knows what the actual stats are that would solve the issue right there.
I'm particularly interested in the Valkyrie, Hammerhead, and Centurion which Jason didn't list the numbers for. If we can get enough measurements posted I will compile them and put them on the web.
As a final note, it seems that the 0-300 speed (stop to cruise) is nearly the same for all ships at about 5 seconds.
