Manhattan

If Planet Manhattan is about the same size as the Earth, and covered by one huge city, howcome only 220 million people live there !?!!

Do they give everyone a skyscraper each !?

Yeah, 220 million people on one planet the size of Earth (assuming the land : ocean ratio is still the same) would be kind of sparse. We got what, almost 6 billion people on this planet right now I think.

Now, if it was 220 million people on 1 continent... That would sound more probable.

Ideally, I think what Planet Manhattan should have is 5 continents... Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens, and The Bronx (named after the 5 boroughs of NYC). Or lump Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island on one continent, heh heh. Or maybe throw in a continent named New Joisey bwahaha... Then again, maybe not, because some would also demand another continent named Connecticut.

Put that 220 million on the continent of Manhattan, with all the glitzy skyscrapers and things.

What I want to know is, would the New York Yankees be as despised by the rest of Liberty as they are now by the rest of the U.S., heh heh.

How many habitable planets does Liberty have? the Liberty population must be stretched to fill the colonization of other worlds. Besides, the sleepers could only carry so much of the population, and the Sirius House colonists had only several hundreds of years to repopulate heir colonies. Earth had around 10.000 years of civilisation before it had 6 billion plus.

Yep, population dynamics is a lot of fun to think about, especially for those of us who loves to play "god" games like Sim City.

The thing with our current population explosion is that most of it happened over the past 100 years, even though we human beings have a recorded history of 10,000 years. We started the 20th Century with around 1 billion people if I remember right. Granted most of the population growth was in developing countries (China, countries of Africa, etc.)

If the population explosion model of growth applies to the Sirius Houses, I think Liberty is probably in the worst position, because it is hemmed in on all four sides, with no border systems to expand into like the other three houses can.

Damn, we humans sure know how to propagate!

That has never made much sense to me either. It would make more sense to have Manhattan have a population of 220 billion if it's one big city. You could probably squeeze in more people and still have a lower population density than a major city. They estimate that if you put all 6 billion people on the Earth into 1500 square foot houses with 4 people per house they could all fit inside Texas. If Texas was as densely populated as Tokyo it would probably come close to fitting the 220 billion people. I don't feel like doing the math right now.

Hey, cool! we gonna have 8 billion people in 2020! Im gonna go laugh at the conservationists right now...

Actually, no need to laugh at them... that's what they're trying to prepare for kinda... making each bit of resource last longer...but that's kinda off the topic of this topic...

220 million for a new planet isn't too bad... I mean they started out with probably a thousand or so... plus they had people go off to the other planets within the Liberty realm to colonize and develop them... If you add all of the planets in Liberty together I bet you'd come up with a pretty large number ...much higher than 220 million...

Post Wed Apr 23, 2003 12:16 am

Everyone's gone off topic !!

I don't care about population growth, all I was saying was 220 million in one planetwide city is ridiculous! What they should have said is 220 million people, most of whom live in one huge city.

Put 200 million in that city, and have another 20 million people elsewhere; there's always gonna be people who want to live in the mountains miles from anyone else.............mainly sad loners who spend all day playing computer games, and posting messages in games forums.................!!

Why is that so implausible? it only means that there's a lot more space for everyone. It's just another colony. Take a look at Battletech Universe: 1000 habitable worlds, each with an average population of 200-300 million each. You can't really compare it to Earth.

Maybe it's only the size of a small moon or something...

Give em a break this just a few years in the future... heh heh

Technically Pittsburgh isn't part of New England so it would have to be the North East System.

And I like Chandra's idea of making Brooklyn and Queens part of Long Island. I mean they're part of it now! (a little new york humor there folks).

how many pepole would have come whit the sleeper ships to the Sirus system?

It isnt that long ago so it might be possibel that we just dont breed fast enhough to fill all the inhabbitel plantes in space.
Wich is obvious as lot of pepole are dying in space(accidents, radiation, hostilites, genocide) and because we miss the 2 of the earths fastes growing continents (Afrika, South America) so we just keep breeding at the "Western" speed wich is 1.9 children a mother thus the population should be shrinking not growing.
