I'm gettign these ANNOYING pops-ups all the time knocking me out of the game and everything. They are titled Messenger Service and they are always advertizeing sites to go to, to buy software to stop these pop-ups, which if you think about it kinda funny. But i was wonder if its a trojan or whatever and how the **** do i stop them. Any help would be awesome. i do have a few anti ads programs taht work on everythign but these crazy "messenger Service" ads.

Zonealarm... Zonealarm... i cannot say that word often enough... Zonealarm...

If you allow Freelancer (hell any game in fact) Full permissions in the setup with Zonealarm the popups just stop happening... just make sure you have granted Freelancer FULL permissions or you will have no end of troubles connecting to servers.

This has noting to do with Zonealarm IMO.

Just access 'Services' and look for 'Messenger'. (Services can be found in 'Adminitrative Tools' in the control panel.

Stop the service and change Startup Type to 'Disabled'.
From now on you'll never get this annoying popup messages again!

You should be sorted with the posts above, but check out AdAware6 by lavasoft. I run it every week or so just to remove all the crap that ends up on your system.
Tho if you let it wipe everything it finds progs like kazaa and other ad-supported stuff will probably stop working.
Also there are quite a few ad-trojans being written to avoid detection by AdAware and similar.

You should get Zonealarm to keep pesky programs from accessing the internet and Spybot: Search and Destroy to remove spyware such as Gator, Webhancer, Hotbar, Bonzi, etc. Works like a charm for me

Actually, in a recent PC World test, Spybot actually got more stuff than Ad-Aware, that's why I recommended it. I have Ad-Aware too, but I mainly use Spybot, since it's more effective.

just a note to new/unknowing XP users...

Windows Messenger Service is not the same as Windows Messenger, their little ICQ clone. If you disable WMS <highly recommended> you will still be able to use your MSN/Messenger/.NYET stuff. In this thread there have already been instructions on how to do so. Use Spybot and ZoneAlarm and learn about permissions.

WMS is a little leechbot and television channel built into windowsXPloit for the purposes of selling you soap, tracking your surfing and usage "for helpful marketing purposes" <shya right> and can rightly be considered an insidious form of computer domination, like stealth popunders, java trix and spybots.

you paid for your machine, that gives you the right to install ONLY the software and services YOU desire. Thanks Datadroid for the linkage to Spybot.

You're welcome, thanks for the heads-up about MSN Messenger "Service".
