I agree with you on the auto-aim turrets. I've played Crimson Skies and it works pretty well there; even with a .70 in a turret, it won't make too many kills to make you feel useless (plus when the rear turrets are firing it usually means a bogie is chewing up your tail so you try to move away asap).
Specially in obstacle fields you can't really go to turret mode without crashing into just about anything, so any form of AI that can control the ship in-combat even if it's just defensive manoeuvres or a turret AI would be helpful.
Right now I'm letting my turrets go to waste most of the time, which is a shame because the controls to use them are really easy, it gives you a great view of the combat and it's great fun as well.

Heck you can even sell them seperately on the bases and make them available at different levels (rookie, veteran, not sure if elite is a good idea) at a price.

Auto-aiming turrets would be great -- I tried using the turrets on a freighter once and only once. The result was disastrous -- they were all over me and I almost lost the freighter (I did lose a lot of nanos and batteries).

I rarely use the autopilot features. I don't hit the dock button until I'm right on top of my destination (unless it's a station or docking ring, then I'm 250-500 m away).

It's almost too bad -- I've died several times, jumping up to do something else when I hit a jumpgate or trade lane, only to hear, "Shields fail," from across the apartment. Nothing sucks more than having to pee in the middle of a trade run with perishable cargo.

auto aiming turrets are fine; aouto aiming all guns, or a combat aoutopilot are not.

I think that fan site is misleading, but it isn't actually incorrect. See, if you're in a freighter, and you join formation with a friendly NPC freighter, you will follow that ship through combat (evasive maneuvers, docking with trade lane, etc). That would allow you to fully concentrate on firing your turrets. However, you cannot follow an ENEMY while you fire at them.

And TwoSheds--I believe that the "neural net helps you aim" comment refers to the little aiming cross that shows you how to properly lead enemy ships. Coming from a background of WWII sims, I can tell you that that little aiming cross is a big deal in itself. Makes things almost too easy...
