First look in your nav map and hit the mining button (the icon is something like a pickaxe and shovel). You'll see minable areas marked in gray. Fly there. Switch to a single weapon so you'r not firing everything you've got (otherwise your shots may destroy the ore). You'll notice some of the faster moving objects get a spinning white reticle when you point at them. Shoot these, some of them will release ore which you can then tractor in and sell.

Note: you'll get these little destroyable rocks/debris in areas not marked for mining, but so far I've never gotten ore from them outside a mining area.

If mining is what you find fun, feel free to do it all you want, but if you're doing it to make money, it is really slow. It takes forever to fill up a cargo hold. By the time you've filled a freighter's cargo hold, you could have made several trade runs and have made millions of credits profit. The only thing I personally think mining is good for is if you are totally broke and need some way to make money without spending any.

silverton field in colorado is especially good, unles you want to be friends with the xenos..

I found a gold mining field, can't remeber where, mined it (it takes forever) and made a HUGE amount. More than I had ever made in a trade run.

when you minning think - in place you minning this costs not much - so you need after you have the full cargo - to sell it in plase it cost a lot like tokyo so minning - time + to go to tokyo - more time. now answer me - do you need it?
