Clever trick.

This only works if you can program macros into whatever controller you are using. I use a Thrustmaster Tactical Board.
My current ship has Sweeper and Catapult missiles. I have one button on the Tactical Board set to fire a Sweeper first and then .5 sec later a Catapult, with one button push. Kind of a one-two punch. The Sweeper softens the shields and the Catapult hits the hull. It burns up twice the number of missiles, but I am hoping it will make for more effective use of them in the long run. I haven’t tried it in combat yet, I’ll see if it works.

Sounds like a good plan...of course you could just hit the buttons for your missile launchers on the keyboard right after each other

Sure, if you're willing to expend two slots on missiles. Alternatively, you could also use your number keys to fire the missiles independently.

I wanted a one button solution; combat is hectic enough. I may not stay with this as I will certainly change ships. But I can decide exactly how long the lag is between the two shots. And it looks cool.

the Q key is the default fire missile key

or you can always link up your missile launcher with your guns and press fire

Dude, where's my Super Star Destroyer?

I wanted a ripple effect, and I got it. I just was not impressed with it in combat. I sold the fighter anyway. I am hauling freight at the moment, I'll buy a new fighter when the time comes.
