Is FreeLancer related to Escape Velocity?

<--n00b

Well I used to play an old game on a first generation color-Mac with my cousin called "Escape Velocity". The amount of things associated with that game and this game are amazing! But nowhere have I seen an official comment of this game being related? Hopefully you guys have maybe heard of it? Things like the systems being named after US cities and others from around the globe are all in Escape Velocity. Being able to upgrade your ship and trading goods, all in Escape Velocity.

There are a few things from Escape Velocity that I wish FreeLancer had. Being able to take genuine cargo missions, or ferrying passengers. Basically a variety of missions besides "Go blow this up, or Capture/Kill this guy". Escape Velocity also featured Escape pods that you could buy, where as if you die without one, you start from scratch, A True punishment for dying, but if you do have an escape pod, you lost your ship but keep all your credits.

Purchasable Hangars! Escape velocity had hangars you could buy for your ship, if it had a hardpoint for it. You could have your own personal fighter wing stored with your Cruiser if ever you were engaged by many hostiles. Also, the ability to talk to the AI and get more than a "Im shipping 'X' to 'X' point". You could actually pay some of the other AI units to be escorts and help you out againts rogue attacks, or Pirates as known in Escape Velocity.

The Similarities are so great, I was wondering, are they related? Or did that game maybe spawn the Idea for this one? Hopefully the developers of FreeLancer will continue its potential and update the game to include many more features in the future. Am I being too hopefull :-\

"Is FreeLancer related to Escape Velocity?"

No. There are plenty of games out there that have the same similarities. Try Elite or Privateer, for starters. Did DA take any inspiration from EV? Well, your guess is as good as mine, though I don't find that unlikely.

With that said, Escape Velocity kicks major ASS. Part of the reason why I find FL so disappointing was how games like EV had all these great ideas that could easily be implemented into FL, yet they somehow manage to screw it all up. Oh well, wait for Escape Velocity Nova to come out for the PC later this Spring.

I just caught a review of Escape Velocity, and must say I like what I read. Does anyone know if it'll be available for PC? From what I read, it seems like its only for the Mac (Can't see how).

The previous EVs? Yes, they're only on Mac, and incidentally was one of the few Mac-only games worth playing. I don't know how you would get it to work on the PC. I've tried a Mac emulators a long time ago but it was slow as hell. Of course, someone a little bit more computer-literate could probably pull it off.

I use Basilisk II , An Open Source 68k Macintosh Emulator

The only thing I use it for is Escape Velocity

and EV:Override.

Heres a good site to start you novices off.

They arent 3d but the game play rocks. I love taking over planets and creating my own little empire. And take over ships to make a nice battle fleet. But taking over planets is not all there is. Accually theres tons to do before you can even start to take over planets. And to think you start in only a pitiful shuttle craft. :0

Sorry about that, I meant a preview of EV Nova, the new one. Same question, Mac, or both? Thanks again

Just checked Ambrosia's website. EV: Nova IS BEING PORTED TO WINDOWS. Its currently in a closed beta right now.

Plugins for EV: Nova are also suppported though you have to run them through a conversion utility.
