Maneuverablity?

Hi, first time posting. I am currently half way into the game. I have played the entire Wing Commander series and Starlancer. I love Freelancer's freedom of choice, but in many ways the dogfight in the game is hardly as hardcore as those in the previous games.....no radar, useless missles, inability to give command to wingmen, armour and shield can even be repaired when you are flying the ship...oh boy....

The story is far too linear for my taste as well. Anyway...

What I have also noticed is that all the ships have the same speed, but they appear to have different maneuverability. Some ships can turn much faster then the rest, but there seem to be no information regarding this when you make the purchase. Why is that? How can I know which ship can be handled better? I think maneuverable is a very important element in combat.

a body in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. In otherwords the larger and heavier a ship the less responsive it will be. Freighters are not fighters and the heavier the ship the more time it will take to turn. The other side of the coin the more damage it will take before blowing up. A trade you must decide if you wish to take. I can not say anymore without being a spoiler. Just some thoughts from the edge of space.

Classical physics...

So no difference exist between two heavy fighters?

Take, for example, the Liberty Defender and the Bounty Hunter Barracula, both are classed as HF. The Defender seems to have a poor handling while the Barracula is highly maneuverable. Further, Barracula has better armour then the Defender, so handling is apparently not inversely related to the armour either.

I would love to know the answer to this question as well. So far I have purchased a defender, then a cavalier. I really fancy a Hawk next. I too enjoy the maneoverability of a light fighter. If I remember correctly I think there is a web site that actually informs you of the agility of the ship. But I might just have read it in the description, not specs. I think there is a very expensive heavy fighter somewhere that is as light on its feet as a light fighter.

The newest faq at gamefaws.com has a listing of ships and their maneuverability. I think it's estimated??, but it's better than nothing.

Poorest is the humpback (and it really blows), and best is the drake. Not all HF's have the same stats for this.

"Poorest is the humpback"

He he, that is THE understatement of the year

They don't manouver, they just get there, somehow....

Yes classic physics with a twist as you are correct about all ships not being equal when they are sized in the same class. There are some that are more agile than others and as those with the humpback have found out if it looks big and fat it flys that way too! LOL, Seriously thanks to whomever posted the site with the specs on it while not a perfect solution it will help those with less time and money make better decisions about what not to own. Being at the top level affords one certain opportunites. To experiment with the different ships I Save a game at port with whatever I want to purchase then buy the ship sail off on a couple of missions and if I don't like it simply reload my old save with the ship I like. I have found some surprising things out about the differences in Heavy fighter class this way I think either the Red Hessians or the Corsairs have some of the best in class. I also made nice with the Xenos and they have an interesting ship or two to offer. Just some thoughts from the edge of space.
