I need help...urgently

Hi ,
I need help with my explorer. I spoke to a lot of people but nobody could help me. You are my last chance.
Whenever I click a link-say like that one kopikari has published in the spoiler forum before- I am unable to open it... I click the link... the new page/browser opens but nothing happens
It happens to all of the links I visit on the net and its very important to fix this problem 'cause I can't connect to my bank (I've got a lot of money hehehe, that money to pay half of the bills?!?!?)

I talked to a lot of people at the online helpdesk of the bank, with friends etc...etc... but nobody could help.
here are the settings:
activeX enabled
java scripts enabled
Internet tools security set to minimal
Internet tools advanced is set to all allowable settings

I removed the explorer and set to 5.50 but the same goes on after reloading IE6SP1... the same...

I wrote to microsoft but didn't have any response yet
I am sick of it and don't want to format the box so,
If anyone have an idea what could happened pls let me know...

thx in advance

Sometimes i can't open any sites,... there could be several reasons for that to happen.

But most of these problems are individual and mostly get solved by messding around in your own pc,...

But anyway here are some possible solutions!

Clear your temp files, clear your internet temp files, clear your cookies, restart your pc, reconnect to the internet,... check your internet settings,... set your surfing options,...

Thanks again for your prompt reply

If you can't click links, how are you reading the forum?

This isn't abuse, it's just that I suspect the description of your problem isn't complete. With a better idea of what's going on it will be easier for myself, or anyone else, to help you out... and there's a pretty good chance I'll be able to help you -- I have to work closely with explorer problems every day.

Yes, give us some more info on what you mean by not being able to click on the links... do you mean certain types of links are not working? The bulletin board here is all hyperlinks, so it looks like some of your links are functioning properly at least... let us know!

ok I'll try to explain it with much more detail.

Let's say you go to a web site and there is this part where it says "enter" and
when you click the enter icon a new window appears as a seperate window.
That window does not download anything, it do not connects with the site it have to.
This happens i.e. when I try to get connect to my bank. After it opens the main page I have to click the enter button which opens a new java applet which connect me, or should connect me with the security entry page, where user id and password is requested. This page freeze-I mean no deal with data on the internet. When i push the F5 key to refresh, the link address shows up in the blue bar on the top of the window, but as said before nothing happens.

As a confirmation I tried to connect to another banking site and its security page which is similar to the one I use. There is everything ok. I talked to the banks helpdesk, and we checked the overall system, my internet options security (lowered them all) anbled all cookies needed, set the whole activeX' to enable, checked the java scripts, checked the cipher strenghts (128-bit) and version (IE and Java) but no change. I also downgraded IE from 6.0.2800.1106 to 5.50... the same happenes.

Yesterday I talked to MS helpdesk on the phone and the guy said " the best I
can advise is, format your PC and rebuilt 98SE again."
Everything has been checked, so far I know and the people knew?!?!?! Cleaning
internet temp files and cookies and history and all the other temp files (I do this
evertime before I connect to the net) scan disk and defrag checking certificates
did not help.

Its not just the banks web site java applet. Whenever I click a link, which opens a new window on any web site, the same occurs. But the links within a site like the lancers reactor home page to forum and then to discussions are ok.

As you may understand it is a situation exactly suitable for a microsoft aprils fool!!!
Virus scanning shows no thread firewall was not screwed. everything seems quite
normal smooth and so happily and silent...!!!

As a flight dispatcher I work also at home for checking the flights I2m responsible for.
And with this problem going on I am not able to continue from home base, 'cause the progs I use are mostly using java applets for short requests. As you understand its not only the connected problem with paying bills over home banking. It is also my job.

Sapient6, you are my last chance before I throw that **** box out of the window
I hope you can help me with that problem... I'll look around the forum and wait for your answer. Hope the above helps to understand.

thanks in advance for your kind help and understanding.

Is it all links that open external windows, or only links that open a new window and include a java applet? For instance, does this link work:

Lancer's Reactor

It should display a page we know you can normally open, but does so in an external window. If that link doesn't work then it sounds like IE is thoroughly hosed on your machine. I'm going to proceed with the assumption that the link doesn't work-- if that assumption is wrong and it DOES work, then try the "workarounds" below with a link that you know doesn't work.

Work around #1:
1. Open a new browser window
2. Instead of just clicking on the link, try dragging it into the new browser window

Work around #2 (if #1 doesn't work):
1. Open a new browser window
2. Right click on the link and select "Properties"
3. Highlight the URL listed in the properties box and hit Ctrl-C
4. In the new browser's address bar highlight the current address and hit Ctrl-V

If neither work around works, or you want to try a possible fix so you don't need a work around, you can try this. Of course they might have already had you do this, but you didn't mention it so it's worth making sure you know it can be done:

Possible Fix:
1. Open up Add/Remove programs from the control panel
2. Find the entry for IE (Microsoft Internet Explorer)
3. Click the "Change/Remove" button
4. It should prompt you with a dialog with a couple different options. The one you want is REPAIR. Select that and run it, but make sure no browsers are open when you do.

Last ditch fix:
If you haven't already you might want to move your IE version back up to 6 from 5.5. Don't get me wrong, I think 5.5 is better than 6 for several reasons, but the process for backing off versions of IE is notoriously unreliable. There's always the chance that upgrading to the latest version might patch up whatever's broken.

If none of those work, then you've got serious problems. There's something wrong beyond just IE being hosed, and it's more like your OS has taken a hit. A backup of your current data, then a format and reinstall is probably the best option for you. Not what you want to hear, I know.

If anything more information develops from this, or these suggestions lead to more data be sure to post it -- I'll keep an eye on this thread just in case.

That's an annoying problem, I suffered with it for a few days myself. It happens when a new software installation overwrites or removes the registry entry for one of the dll files IE needs to use links (Or one of these files could have been removed during the removal of some software). In my case, I had to download an older version of oleaut.dll and place it in my system folder. For most people, all that needs to be done is to re-register urlmon.dll.

You can find detailed repair instructions here:

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answer ... nk_windows

Hope this helps,

Sparky

P.S. Generally running the built in IE repair will not fix this problem, but it has been known to do so on occasion. There's no harm in trying it.

off the top of my head it sounds like there's been a manual proxy invoked. I'll do some more research on this tonight.

Here's a thought...

Or this one...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... us;q241344

or this bit of advice...

"A pop-up killer can prevent you accessing on-line banking."

or check for any resident viruses that might be forcing a url on any new browsers being opened (rare)

This one looks promising too...

If it's doing exactly what he's saying; click a link on a web page, a window opens but stays blank, then it's most likely the dll issues I've described. Been through this myself, as mentioned.

A popup stopper wouldn't allow the new page to even try to open. Had to troubleshoot that with my cousin, who had a popup stopper, forgot about it, AND shut off the alert sound it makes when blocking a popup. And those only apply to popups generated through jscript. If this is happening when he right clicks on a link and chooses "Open in New Window", it's not related to a popup stopper.

And if the IP address were lost, then the original window would not open either, not just daughter windows.

I think the other suggestions are perfectly valid too, I'm not trying to squash them. It's just that from what's described as the problem here, I know exactly what he (oops, or she) means, as it was really bugging me for a bit there. I have many references to this from sites and newsgroups, and oddly enough, it seems that Microsoft doesn't want to address the problem directly in their knowledgebase, or apparently even through phone support.

It's really not hard to fix though, just check that URL I posted above. I wanted it to be copy and pastable though, which is why it's posted that way.

Sparky

Edit: Of course if it IS just jscript generated windows, then it does sound like a popup stopper problem. Try the right click>Open in New Window option with a standard link. If that doesn't work either, then it's not a popup stopper. If this is ONLY happening when you click a button which is supposed to open a window.. like "Login here"... "Vote Now", etc... then it sure does sound like one.

Yep, I had a problem like that once with a manual proxy... all the above pretty much covers the bases for anything, lol

Hi folks,

Thanks to all of you, that you had an eye on me and for your great support. I appreciate it very much.

Sapient6
Work around #1 has failed
Work around #2 was applicable but not for all sites
Fix #1 has failed
I applied your ditch fix and now I am using IE 5.50 but the problem goes on
I think to reinstall IE and 98SE again, I think your way could be the best and radical one to solve the problem. Thanks again for your kind support and understanding.

Sparky12, also thanks to you;
the repair instructions helps but did not solve the problems.

Stinger,
The sites were very helpful and all have been followed by me step by step

So all the .dll and registry entries are normal and everything is like it have to be but I am not understanding how this can go on. The problem should be solved and fixed. I think that it will be the best way to reinstall everthing. Maybe a good way to clean up the trunk.

Again a big thanks to all of you, and sorry for being late to reply to you all. I'll let you know about the news. Now I'll get in my Titan and blow up some bad guys to calm down my nerves...hehehehe

See you again soon. Bye and thanks again
