I think someone made a valid point that other than the date there's really nothing to inidicate to the non-hardcore fan that it's fake.
It's quite easy to imagine someone who loves Freelancer, but isn't really a hardcore gamer (and therefore doesn't visit fan sites or remember every little detail about the game) looking up Freelancer expansion pack in a search engine. He comes upon that news blurb, gets all excited about the expansion, never notices the date on the post, then goes on a fruitless quest to find when it comes out. With archiving search engines a person could come across that post weeks, even months from now.
Assuming that the person really liked the game, how do you think they'll feel when they find out after driving around trying to find the game, bugging the employes at the local game store for a release date, searching for a place to buy it on the web, that they're the butt of an obtuse joke? A little unlikely? Sure I guess so, but enough people here were convinced to make me think there's plenty others out who read the post, never bothered checking the forum and are out there eagerly awaiting what seems to be a very cool and very plausible expansion pack.
Now the follow up post that Boscoe made IS truely funny.
