Any chance of playing the original?

After checking out the movies presented in the TLR downloads section I would like to know if there's a chance to obtain the previous, ORIGINAL version shown in those 2000 and 2001 previews. I mean, DA surely didn't simply erase all those masterpieces of programming, didn't they?

Any hints regarding possible ways of obtaining the

"Chris Roberts' Freelancer"

are really appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

"I dont know you, you must be new here....Okay heres whats going on.."

I am planning to storm Digital Anvil's corporate headquarters with a team of elite shock troops, at the same time another team will converge on Chris Roberts. I will be incharge of storming the hq, you go after Roberts. *snicker*

Get real.

Actually, some of that code may still be there, and trust me, modders are hard at work trying to find it. However, if it was axed, it's gone for good.

those who understand binary, and those who don't.

"However, if it was axed, it's gone for good."

I'm not gunna believe that for a second. At the very least it must exist in a source-control system somewhere in DA's offices.

DataDroid, I would prefer to remain in the fictional world in which I have my own team of elite shock troops.

Ppl, I didn't wanna read some fictional answers, but serious ideas. Do the guys of DA actually read the messages left in this forum? I mean, has the game been changed (=castrated) because of copyright issues related to Chris Roberts' lay off or what? And what is Mr. Roberts doing now?

I hope, the original Freelancer code still exists and there is a chance of it being released as "Freelancer-we-are-sorry-for-the-v1.0-crap-here's-the-original-deal".

Why has a great RPG been eventually reduced to what it is today - a rather dumb FPS?

@bruchpilot:

First of all, Chris Roberts is now busy trying his luck as filmmaker. He has his own production company called Point of No Return Films. Word is that he´s working on a live-action Wing Commander Series and he´s also working on a movie about a pilot in World War I.

About the ´original´Freelancer as you call it:

DA created a certain concept which they probably talked about for a very long time. A few people probably thought that the original concept wasn´t entirely satisfactory and has therefore been shaped into the existing concept as seen in stores. The ´original´ concept has never been finalised and many features aren´t quite up to todays standards (for instance the graphics and such). Either two things could have happened; one, almost everything from the ´original´concept has been edited and upgraded into the existing concept and therefore there actually is no ´original´version or two, they dropped the whole ´original´concept and only used minor parts of it to create the existing concept. Personally I think the first thing happened and there really isn´t much left from the ´original´concept besides some concept art, a few storyboards, some in-game visuals and of course the initial intro movie (FMV). Besides, if they do have some kind of ´original´version which had been finalised (which I truly doubt) then there´s no way on earth they will ever release it. Just think about George Lucas and the original Star Wars movies. We all saw them and after many years, old Georgie boy made some major changes and re-released them as `The Special Editions´on VHS. Now everybody is waiting for them to come out on DVD some day and asking if he will also put the ´original´films on the DVD. George told the fans that the Special Editions are his definitive vision and nobody will ever see anything about the ´original´versions again. He said he was never satisfied with them and now we can only see his Special Editions come out on DVD. Some hate the Special Editions and want the ´original´films, but the majority accepts his judgement and are fine with the Special Editions, simply because they think the SP´s are better. I think this is similar with DA, they were not satisfied about the ´original´concept and therefore changed it.

There is an expression which fits here pretty well: "you can't unscramble scrambled eggs".

But the final product is less than the original concept. Can we at least have defenders with folding wings comon just make the defender have folding wing!
It was so cool when the defenders wings unfolded.

Well if there was ever code made towards the original concept, they wouldn't just throw that code away. They'd keep it in source control even if that code was deleted out of the release revision. The reason they'd keep it is so they could provide it as proof of patent if at some point in the future they want to litigate. This is nearly a universal policy in the software industry.

That said, even if there is old cold representing some of the original concept sitting in source control somewhere there's almost exactly zero chance anyone not working for DA or M$ will ever see it. Ever. It won't ever be released. Seriously. Never. The only two ways to see it are to either get hired by DA and snoop around their old code or to train an elite team of ninjas and secure it through violence. I believe both of those methods are equally realistic.

Alright... when do we start?
