Barrel Rolling possible?

But the guy is smart he won't follow you close enough to be surprised by such maneuvers. This game lets you shoot in a much wider arc than other flight games. Actually...I should say this game HAS a firing arc, UNLIKE other flight games. (It's a cone if you want to get technical)

Even if it doesn't make them miss every time as long as it works part of the time it's worth figuring out. And, at least in my experience, it does work sometimes. Although in FL it'd have to be a very large corkscrew to be able to avoid much fire. But it would certainly help if fighting less experienced pilots, since they'd prolly just concentrate on the + it gives you to aim at, and a good corkscrew plays havoc with that thing

im playing the demo how EXACTLY do i make the adjustments to be able to barrel roll

All you need to do a barrel roll is to figure out which direction you want to go. In non-Newtonian space sims, they usually bind keys for the maneuver, but in ACTUAL flight sims (Falcon 4.0 for example) everything is manual.

If you notice after an intense fight, your "attitude" is usually not x-axis centered like everything else (horizontal, like the planets and everything else). The game then auto-centers you.

Barrel rolling is a combination of a few simple maneuvers, its only the timing that is tricky. Also note that simply rotating your ship along the z-axis (imaginary line running nose to tail) is NOT technically a barrel roll, its simply a roll.

So here are the elements:

360 degree roll on z-axis (full roll)
x and y axis movement to form a corkscrew flight path (yaw/pitch)

Simplest barrel roll is to "pull back" on the stick while rolling the craft to the left or right. Since most people opt to not use joysticks, this is difficult, since the "mouse flight" option only controls your current vector (direction and speed). Its too bad there's no flight recorder option or training sim to practice maneuvers. Basically to barrel roll in any direction, simply put the gunsight in a corner of the screen, and rotate it around the edges. If you're going fast enough and are in a maneuverable ship (i.e. no Humpbacks or Titans), your flight path should mimic a reasonable corkscrew.

I have not discovered the way to key bind manually yet, but I will try.

I'd love to roll simply because it looks cool and would make combat appear even more dynamic and would make it more fun. Doesn't matter if it's actually useful or not. Speaking of "useful": it often happend to me that i wanted to align myself to something in a certain way and had to do rolling by stupidly turning the ship first down then right, then at the target again, repeating the process multiple time until i was aligned like i wanted to. A simple roll would become so handy for this purpose.

Yeah,

This is all fine and dandy.. But still no one has explained where the hell you find this infamous "UserKeyMap" file.. There is no such file...

Post Tue Apr 01, 2003 8:31 pm

exactly...i have searched but to no avail to find this file... Where is it?

I actually haven't modified this in any way, but saw this and had a gut instinct of where to find it. Sure enough, it's not in the actual Freelancer directory - it's where the savegames are also stored in the My Documents\My Games\Freelancer directory. Hope this helps.

Im still working on getting this to work properly. It still only works while in normal flight mode, when you cant steer your ship. Has anyone else had better luck yet?
