Barrel Rolling possible?

This is a free discussion forum on Freelancer. This is the place to discuss Freelancer issues NOT covered by the other boards!

Just tried the instructions in that other post and it worked great, too bad I don't and can't play in cockpit view. I'm also very interested in getting this to work, perhaps not quite as desperate as you, but it would be a nice addition to the game.

(edit) Noticed that you can also do barrel rolls while in rear view if you had previously activated cockpit view, though it's impossible to do it if you just go into rear view from third person. Strange stuff.

Well so far iv run into a problem i suppose. because it will only work if the mouse mode is not turned on. Which pretty much defeats the purpose. Where you able to barrel roll in conjuction with using mouse flight? I know that so far it is only working in cockpit view but still. The buttons for barrel rolling seem to disable when using mouse flight.

I remember seeing somewhere that people could not get it to work in mouse flight. Too bad, really. I guess they don't want you to end up "upside down" while you're flying around space This discussion is gonna turn into the system layout thread pretty soon.

Heh well technically speaking you wouldnt be upside down. In freelancers world, i guess you would be because it was based on a 2 dimmensional layout. In example. At planet Manhatten you dont have trade route gates above or below the planet. I find that a disapointment, but hey ill probably create my own little universe that does include gates like that. It only makes sense, however some people would probably have some issues with the map mentally . But hey theres a way to get the barrol rolling, as open as this code is, there has to be a way. If there is i intend to find out how.

A spinning target is harder to hit than a strafing one. I like to combine rolling with strafing and pitching and yawing at the same time...it makes you next to impossible to score a hit on.

Reaper: $200,000,000.
Rockets: $100,000
The look on that pilot's face when you launch a full pod of screamers up his tailpipe: priceless

Um...rolling does jack. The target leader doesn't roll, and it's centered right on the axis you're spinning on. Just point and click, hehe =P

I think the idea is to be able to 'corkscrew' which is a combination of barrel rolling and adjustments to attitude and pitch (if there is such a thing in space). I have seen NPCs do these corkscrew maneauvers, which would only be possible if you could barrel roll, and they are damn hard to hit when they are doing it. So, if there were a way to barrel roll, then we could figure out a way to corkscrew and make ourselves harder to hit.

But yes, a barrel roll by itself is ineffectual unless an opponent is trying to hit a specific part of your ship, which they don't do.

Those are my thoughts, not yours, I'm WapCaplet[!

Well i really hope that somebody else can look into this as well. Like i mentioned earlier im not a programmer, and am not very good looking at this information. Maybe this should be in the editing forum? Id love for those talented editors to take a look at this and see if maybe they have some clue as to what we need to do.

Barrel rolling seems to be pretty much useless in this game when shields are up, as the shields seem to extend in a sort of circle around the entire ship, so it doesn't really appear to make you a harder target. However, when the shields are down, it does make a small difference.

Heh, im beginning to think that i need to change the title to, "If your interested in getting barrolling to work in Freelancer, come here" Im seeing to many negative responses. I mean no disrespect to others posting in here, its just we need solutions, not reasons why "you" think itd be useless. Trust me, once I find a way to get it to work, id love to show you why i wanted it so bad .

Sorry, but that's just what I discovered while using barell roll, albeit in it's currently rather crippled state. If you can get barrel rolling to work properly and show how it's effective, I would be overjoyed

well if i ever get it working id love to show ya, as long as it works as it should. We could 1 on 1, or we could team up and do some missions . Of course i suppose id have to build up a good ship to be of any use to begin with. If youv got a good server i could hop on, and start earning some dough, let me know.

I think you could corkscrew just by moving the mouse to one of the corners, combining yaw and pitch changes, right?

Post Tue Apr 01, 2003 5:08 am

well kinda, but it requires way to much work, without just keys to make your ship roll. Like i said before it was in previous space sims, and it was very helpful.. So if you have Wing command Prophecy, use the Q and W keys while flying . Tachyon, i think was delete and page down... hmm been a long time sense iv played that one, but i remapped em to the Q and E keys because W was of some importance that i cant remember now. But in Freelancer the option and code is there, we just have to find out how to make it work.

Rolling would actually be useful in mp dogfights.

Part of the fight is to try and predict which direction the ship you are targetting is going to move in and if you have the ability to roll your ship then you can use it confuse and disorientate your opponents by moving even more erraticly
