Is there a way to level up without the storyline?

I'd like to level up but not thorugh the storyline, because I'm getting my butt kicked in the story and need to get higher level weapons an such before I continue the story. Of course, to level up I have to complete the story mission.

Is there an edit so I can purchase weapons/armor without leveling up, or a way to level up wihtouth the completing storyline missions?

No. You should be able to complete all of the storyline with the equipment available to your level. Just earn some money and buy the best ships and equipment you can find.
