How exactly do you "mine"?

When they talk aobut mining a debris filed or asteroid field, how exactly is it done? Do I need a special beam item to mine?

Just shoot at the moving rocks (your crosshairs will turn white when you move over them) and than press Tractor beam (B default key).
Most of the times the rock you shoot will be empty.
Use one gun, no special mining equipment needed.

If your ship has a single rear turrent you could go to turrent mode, it seems to keep certain minerals intact when i go mine. Less chance of blowing them up completly too.
