Questions about derelict ships

I have recently been cruising around asteroid fields looking for derelict ships, and I have a few questions about them:

1) Are they always found in the same place? What I mean is, if I start another SP game, will the same derelict ships be found in the same locations and contain the same loot?

2) I am able to blow up some derelict ships, but not others. They all have a red damage bar that I am able to get down to 0, but sometimes the ship refuses to blow up at all. Explanation?

3) Do derelict ships "respawn" at all? What happens if I enter a MP game and find a bunch of derelict ships and take their stuff? Will other players lose out on that particular derelict ship? Would it then be possible to go around the universe, find ALL the derelict ships, shoot them, take the loot and thereby prevent any other players from getting anything from them?

4) When searching for them, what is the range of your scanners? How wide of a search pattern should I set to be sure I am scanning all parts of any given debris field?

Thanks to anyone and everyone who can give me some insight on this one.

Yes... same locations, same loot.

I don't know why some derelicts can be blown up. The destroyable ones seem to be part of larger groups of derelicts. Other than that it's normal that you can't blow 'em up. It's part of the game to work that way.

I dunno how it's handled in MP (if at all, i want to play on Elite, but it's always full ) but i'd presume that every player get's his own stock of derelicts to make chances even. If that shouldn't be the case it would suck.

Derelicts always show up on the nav map if you come as close as 6km, the range of the targetting scanners depends on the enviroment though. But no matter how reduced the sensor efficiency is, the nav map isn't affected by it.

Can only pass along some info on this one, mp is out for me till poor-connectionville-usa discovers the joys of anything faster that 28.8, hehe

From some previous posts, in the mp environment, when the server is first brought on-line all derelect ships are loaded. Then after anyone has looted that derelect it is then empty, and will remain that way till the server re-boots.

Again, this is not first hand info, so please do not have me ventilated if this prooves false.

So by that understanding, if you were running a dedicated server and never rebooted, it would be possible for someone to join for the first time (after the server had already been running for weeks) and discover that ALL the derelict ships had already been looted.

That would suck. I guess it is realistic, but it still sucks. A nice touch would be to have random derelict ships "spawn" from time to time in random locations. Occasionally there has to be a flight of rogues that gets ambushed and stranded out in the middle of nowhere, or a convoy that disappears into the "Bermuda Triangle" of the galaxy and reappears somewhere else with crew missing, etc.

Oh well. Hopefully there are enough derelict ships out there that it would take a loooong time before they are all found and looted.
