New to the game, my thoughts so far...

Hey everyone, I've been reading this message board for a while, getting a sense of the game and all it has to offer. So far I'm having a blast, so I will say overall, I really like this game. Now that that's done, I do have some gripes.

1.) It's highly annoying AND unrealistic that rival factions instantly key on you as soon as you appear in-system. It doesn't matter that half the Liberty Police may be gunning them down, rivals completely ignore them as soon as you show and then make it their mission to grease you.

2.) The lacklustre approach to your ship and it's upgrades. Mostly that all the ships go the same speed, and that missiles are generally useless. Every space combat game has made missiles and torps the real power behind your ship, but in this game they're a complete waste, and they cost and arm and a leg. And all you can do for your engines is buy a more economical thruster..... boring.

3.) The graphics. While the graphics are good, they're hardly a step up from older games like Tachyon or even Freespace 2. And what I really miss from Privateer 2(I'm sorry, I know most hated this game, but I loved it), were the highly stylized planet surface/space station interior graphics. SUre, they were 2D, but they were damn cool.

4.) The economics system. Not a huge issue, but I wish commodity prices were randomized, and shaped by conditions on other planets. Cargo missions would be cool too; again, another step back this games takes to the 7-year old Privateer 2.

That's about all the gripes I have really. Nothing huge, but if they were implemented, they would elevate the game from great to classic. I guess I can't complain though, it's been ages since even a half decent space combat/trading game has come along.

Happy freelancing!

Welcome to the club, what you mentioned above is just the tip of the iceberg. Its like it was made for retarded children who's brain would grind to a halt if they used it just a teeny weeny bit to play this game.

I don't know about Tachyon's graphics being better than Freelancer's. I've installed it about two weeks ago and it look quiet bland to me. I've played past the tutorial of Thacyon and then I uninstalled it. The game just didn't capture my attention like ecery other Space sim title I've ever played before.

But then again everybody have a different opinion on everything in life so I can only give my own opinion on this, other people's opinions will most likely differ from mine, but that is what makes life interesting.

Xaanix, please show a little bit more objectivity and drop the insults as they aren´t gaining you any points on the popularity list. Besides, it´s against the TLR rules, so be advised...

I agree with most of your points. The only exception is the missles. I use them frequently and they've gotten me out of a number of jambs. The Slingshot/Catapult and Sweeper missles are a deadly combination when used correctly. Certain ememies however are virtually immune to them so you need to be aware of that as well before wasting them all on a fighter that is good with countermeasures and afterburners. In almost every instance though they will make contact when fired at fighters approaching you.

Oon-tee-dee!

I read a tip on the missile issue you seem to have,...

When to best use misslies: At enemies flying directly at you! This way the missiles speed and the enemies speed are combined, and thus close in on each other with great speed. Secondly the missile does not have to do corners, which increases hit chance!

When not to use missiles: At enemies crossing your path, behind you, or enemies flying away from you! See above for same reasons! Enemies flying away can use countermeasures, or afterburner,... the missile homing speed is very low than. Enemies behind you or crossing your path cause the missile to do big corners,... reducing hit chance considerably!
