Defying Physics

Hey, anyone else notice this?

activate your cruise engines until you reach a speed of 300, and then hit [z to cut the engines and use momentum to continue flying in a certain direction. In the same direction, apply thrusters. is it me or does the spped drop to 200?

When you engage trusters you reengage the inertia dampeners as well, which keeps the engine at 200 max... (or so they say; but deep down we all know it's a stupid bug )

I find it pretty amusing...all the nice little mysteries of Sirius space you can find, down to the last detail

try Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos if u want realistic physics

Remember, on a scale of 1 to Awesome, I'm Totally Great

The physics of Freelancer have never been billed as realistic.

Let's get those missiles ready to destroy the universe!!

For some reason, my cut engines function (Z) does not work. I know the Z key on my keyboard works, but when I'm in the game, it doesn't appear to cut my engines at all. Nothing happens. Anyone else experience this problem? Should I just try remapping the key?

Those are my thoughts, not yours, I'm WapCaplet[!

I'm experiencing the problem with "z" not killing my engines also. What gives?

you could try to bind the function to a different jey and bind it back to 'z' to see whether it works.

Cutting engines doesn't seem to work when the ship is automatically piloted [ie. 'Goto' or 'Dock', or 'Formation' functions'. you need to be in full control of your ship. If you do manage to get the 'z' feature to work, your speed will become negative if you face your ship backwards. Also, your speed will decrease gradually when you cut engines.

hope this helps.

As for I-War 2, anyone know where to get it? the guys at EB tell me it's been discontinued of all things. I heard it was a great game, but held off on buying it till later. I was afraid this would happen to FL, so I got it ASAP.

Realistic physics...not that I really care about that....heehee...space is a vacuum, so let's cut the sound too for realistic physics. Anyway, one of the first space sim to try 'Newtonian physics' was Mantis, back in the days of Wing Commander 1, and it was so not fun.

I remember mantis well, Frontier and First Encounters also tried to keep realistic physics. I remember chasing planets/bases all over the place till I learned the auto dock/time accelerate maneuver.

One thing I might mention about killing engines... if you intend to do it so you may turn around and blast your pursuers, make sure you were not previously GoTo-ing a planet's docking ring. The "warning: entering atmosphere" voice is a bit hard to hear when you have 6 high-level weapons firing continuously.

If you have used the "Go To" function, engine kill does not work. Get back in Freeflight to kill them.

Getting a bit OT here aren't we? Well, in any case, the answer would be you are most likely to find it on eBay or the shelf of used games....or you could do what I did and go to gamestop.com. Well, I don't know about you guys, but I sure wouldn't want to be hurtling towards Manhatten going 3000 whatever-speed-units-we're-using. At least in the demo for IW2, if you just held down your booster you could go well past 'safe' speeds. Imagine smacking into a star going 3x faster than in a trade lane.......... scary.
