no seems to have given much credit......

To the notion that while every review and hordes of people have posted about the lack of variation in npc speech and missions, no one has really stuck up to the fact that this rather large game has after all been jammed onto (as i believe it from all the reading here and the reviews) one CD!!!! No one has really bothered to say too much that the npc's do have variation in how they remember meeting you either. As for missions, every hting I have read on freeleancer over the course of it's development cycle and especially the latest developers diaries and the fanstock held at DA points to the developers aiming at the player using their imagination to do as the title suggests and Freelance.

So plz give thought to the enormaous amount of effort placed in a) shaping the final game to have it fit on one cd(I'm sure the arguments in the developers cutting room were good ones and b) if there was so much more to the voices and missions then that would sure have meant more time in recording , more time in programming and more space required on CD and hdd.(yea yea I know most would not say no to that I guess)

I've only played the demo so far and that has me drooling for the april release in the UK. From what I've heard of the story, I surely hope and wish that the game sells well worldwide and that DA will have the remit to do an add on mission pack like righteous fire was for privateer and perhaps in this pack will be enhanced npc speech and missions to silence all those critiques. AS to me sp always comes first and I never get enough of it

Can't wait to try multiplayer too. The fun factor of playing with friends grouped and going about the universe promises to be immense fun as it does time consuming - which is exactly as it should be to hold your attention on the game so you don't much want to do anything else cos you're having so much fun

So kudos to DIgital Anvil for bringing a much needed breath of fresh air to the space arena (it was always a sorry day when Origin invested in ultima online and stopped the wing commander franchise )

As well as the community bringing out its mod's ( I hope you don't necessarily have ot have them to play on any servers unless its advertised as being a custom server requiring so and so mod) I truly hope with what the story line promises to be that there will be official add - on campaigns to come in the future also.

well thats all i have to say for now

roll on April 11th DAMMIT!!!!

Amen to that Harb

Freelancer has me drooling and in suspense for the ´real thing´ to be released April 18th also !! From what i´ve seen (a friend of mine already has FL at home, because he ordered it from a US website) the voice talents of the important characters are very good and the voices of the less important npc´s really don´t bother me. The variation in their speech isn´t really an issue either IMO (certainly not as much as some people have been bitchin and moaning about) and therefore doesn´t bother me. Sure, they don´t have memorable speech, but it´s not that bad either and I can certainly live with it (as most objective persons can I think). There are much more important things than that and I´m very pleased to see that DA put extra effort into the features that really matter IMO. Once DA said something like " We strive for the ultimate gaming experience " and in my opinion they came pretty close ! (as no game is 100 % perfect because of the versatility of gamers and their erratic expectations and visions). DA heard our call for a space based game unlike anything seen before and they have met most of our requirements. Please praise them for the requirements they have met and sometimes even exceeded, instead of giving them the boot for the few requirements they didn´t or couldn´t meet for several reasons.

My 2 cents

Exactly my thoughts also. They have done so much that a few itty bitty points hardly matter compared with the rest of the 'experience'. I'm sure MS and DA have got the gist of the nitpicking that has been going on and who knows maybe they will in a future add on or whatever address these. But in my mind its 'wind in a bucket' and does not matter to me one bit.

So i hope theres some good uk / european servers out there by the time i go mp and I know a few online friends who will playing FL also so should have some good times teaming up.
I have broadband but west coast USA is just too far for a decent ping to try the tlr server but I shall keep up to date with what servers there are for a more general mp experience rather than just starting up a small private one for me and a few friends.

*drools* hmm got any knock out tablets that will wake me up on the 11th???

Actually, I prefer the text message during the job hunting while in bars. I think it's a very cool way to simply get the job or information across to the person without bogging down with too much voice work or cinematics. There is definately a thing as too much cinematics and I don't think Freelancer crosses that border thankfully...although the ability to skip through some cut scenes would be nice as nothing i tried worked.

If the cinematics are trying your patience (like you've seen the same one a gazillion times when going to the commidities dealer), I've found that you can press the 'Esc' key to skip it...

Alternately you can disabale some of them in the game options. Just uncheck the "scripted scenes" option. However, it doesn't shutdown the bar cutscenes nor does it avoid the storyline cutscenes which unlike the ones in the bar you can't press ESC to skip.

The use of game-engine cutscenes probably saved a whole lot of disk space compared to prerendered stuff.

And there are a metric buttload of cutscenes in the story

Look at the capabilities of elite 2 which surpassed freelancer in all areas but story and graphics (though the graphics were great at the time). Now with that in mind you should know only one guy did the programing on elite 2 and the size of the game was less then 700kb.

I wouldn't of minded a 2 cd game if they had included more options but that's besides the point. I do have to admit the voice acting is excellent. Usually the voices in games make me cringe. The only problem I had was with trent himself and his "I'm a prick" voice. Not a bad game for it's size I guess.
