escape velocity?

Ok. Ive done the information button on a few planets now (the ' i ' in a circle)..

What the heck is this "Escape Velocity" ??? Why is it even mentioned?

Post Mon Mar 24, 2003 6:53 am

Escape Velocity is the velocity required to break the planet's gravitational pull and "escape" from it.
It's mentioned because it is. Don't like it, don't read it

Escape velocity means the minimum speed one requires to escape the gravity well of the said object. For example when the apollo spacecrafts left earth they needed the rockets to boost them into a sufficient speed in order to acheive orbit.

Is the Escape Velocity actually used in the game?

Does that mean if you go too slow you can actually crash onto a planet in FL and explode?

No, there's no use for the escape velocity (aka second space speed) in the game. It simply describes the planet, just like its radius, population and other specs do.

Sure it is used... hang around a planet for a while, you'll see freighters crash into them... LOL

Try to close on a sun and escape....you`ll see the gravity love for you and your ship

same goes for the black hole somewhere omega

The escape velocity is just a stat added to describe the planet, it's not in effect.

You can hit and bounce off planets without taking damage in Freelancer (and without getting any gravitational pull).

hit and bounce of them? did you ever tried to hit a planet?

danger entering planet atmhosohere.................whhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaa.....................flrum

Post Mon Mar 24, 2003 9:10 pm

I hit a planet and went poof...

I hit a planet with this god mode thing (dificulty = 0.0) and went poof...

I dont think you can bounce off Would be nice though

Well, atleast the info isnt wasted.. the inhabitans of the planet is used (well, i use it for this..). You can see which faction you need to be in good relations with...

Ofcourse, I just use the official guide

Thanks for clearing this up

Would be cool if the systems were in orbital bliss though. Kind of bummed they left out gravity.

Yno, ur time in space is probably a total of like 10hrs at most, i guess the planets wouldn't move much in that time, but how u figure they keep trade lanes alighned with their destinations?

Positioning thrusters.

Surely if those blighters have the power/energy to work, diverting some of it to the same non-fuel using thrusters each of the ships have shouldn't be advanced engineering.
