I shot up some Navy ships...

I shot up some Liberty Navy ships. After my first shot, he said "I've been hit, verify your target", and after a few more shots, they all became hostile on me and we got into a big fight. I couldn't dock at the base anymore, since that had also become hostile.

Eventually, I jumped to another system. But then the Navy ships were friendly again, and my reputation with the Liberty Navy was still green.

Does this mean if you are very friendly with a faction, you can shoot up a few of their ships and they'll still like you?

Yeah, but each time you blow a few of their ships away, you lose some rep. with the faction you attacked.

Also, the ships/bases around the area that are allied with the faction you attacked will be hostile(however, like you found out, it wears off after some time).

At the beginning they will consider it a VERY unfortunate mistake of yours, being hostile to you temporarily only. But if you continue attacking them they will eventually turn neutral and after some more killings turn hostile.

Blasting Liberty ships is great fun. The merchant vessels are even funner as their escorts are usually weak ships. At least compared to my Saber.

Yes, on a multiplayer server I wanted to quickly "neutralize" my alignment. So I found an Ageira transport near Detroit, "flew casually" right up behind it. Then blasted it to bits before any of the other escorts could react.

It was so wrong. But it felt so very right

I've found it loads of fun to play an evil faction. Nothing quite as satisfying as wasting four large transports under the futile protection of a few light fighters. Man those things blow up big. Now of course I'm on the blacklist of pretty much every good-guy faction in Liberty space.

At least that's how I play multiplayer on my buddy's server. My own game I'm an Outcast and I stick to the Omicron sectors... it's like a totally different game once you get to the edge worlds, pretty cool stuff.
