Maintaining reputation? (rep spoilers)

In SP, is there any point to worrying about your reputation? It seems that time and time again, I will work hard to build reputation with certain groups, but it either shifts suddenly for no reason (for example dropping from max green to neutral when changing systems within Bretonia) or the storyline itself will change my alliances for me. So in the end, no matter how much time I spend carefully checking out the connections of various factions and taking missions based on that, I have no actual control over who my friends are. I'm now probably 75% through the game and no longer care who likes me, I just go along with whoever the game throws at me.

yes it matters, because some weapons/ships/shields u can only buy at certain bases, controlled by certain factions, who if they hate u will not let u land... and it's a bitch not to be able to land on planets if the navy/military/police hate u....

Yep, I know about the effects of reputation. My gripe is that it's not really possible to maintain reps with factions during the SP campaign, since you never know when they're gonna change. It makes the game a lot less open-ended than it could be.

Oh well. At least I finished the SP game now, so I'm hoping my rep will be a bit more stable.

During the story, I wouldn't worry about reputation much.

After the story, it's pretty important
