Freelancer 3DB/CMP importer

I've just submitted a 3DB/CMP importer plugin for Milkshape.

Some examples of what it can do. First of all, everyone's favourite:

A capital ship we all know and love:

It will do cockpits too:

And equipment - even the pilot:

Comments and suggestions welcome.

It's just been accepted and is now available through the downloads page here.

I'm hoping that perhaps some of us who are working on the final decoding of some of the information in the .cmp files can collaborate and get a new exporter out there as well with a lot of new features.

BTW... has anyone heard from HCl lately?

you can import cityscapes too
and, hey the cockpit's have monitor's !!!
I was waiting for this since months
Excellent Work!

Only one little question: can you please implement Hardpoint-support in a future release ? PLAESE

and HCL; one of his last posts was that he would document the .Sur files, since then I never heard anything...

Hey you think you could get your hands on a Rhieland Valkyrie? i wanna put it in freespace 2.

IT DOESN'T WORK AT MINE.
If click on Import and then on freelancer CMP Milkshape shuits down with an error message. What have i done wrong???

Post Sat Aug 02, 2003 9:22 pm

Cityscapes may or may not work properly. More likely not. It's an issue with mesh group rotations. Something I'm working on.

As far as not working correctly... it's a little hard to tell from the information given. What's the error message? What version of Milkshape? OS? Feed me some more info.

Oh, regarding hardpoints...
The answer is yes and no.

No, I'm not going to implement hardpoints in a way that's compatible with HCl's exporter. HCl did some great work, but the exporter has bugs (it inverts the Z axis), it doesn't support mesh groups or LODs, and it doesn't handle the material library.

What we need is a new exporter, and that is what I plan on doing. I wrote the importer with reusable UTF and VMESH classes just so this could be done. With a working importer and exporter with source code, I can then proceed to make a bunch of tool plugins for adding/editing hardpoints, mesh groups, and so forth.

I'm back again.
Inbetween i got it running one time.
OS:Windows98 Second Edition
MS3D Version: 1.66a
I tried it many times no chance. i've reinstalled both and each for itself, but it doesn't do anythin.
But i also don't know why it worked once.
I reinstalled both some times and then it worked i imported the sabre.
perfect.
But then i wanted to import another ship and when i click on the Freelancer CMP button it says somethin like
This application will be closed due to an invalid process.
Contact the manufacturer, if the problem remains.

I've had a few reports now of the plugin crashing MilkShape. I've created a debug version of the plugin that creates a log file. You can download it from my site.

This one creates a log file as soon as the DLL is loaded and logs every function call made. If people who are having problems with it crashing could try this one and then email me the log (to [email protected]) then it will make tracking down what is causing it to crash for you easier for me.

I'll post results.

hm, even your debug version keeps crashing my milkshape 1.66 on windows 98 SE. i have a TNT Ultra and i'm using the MESA OpenGl dll from the milshape site.

Cant find your debug logfile, so heres what Windows got to tell :

LOL It's same Error message as the one i've posted.
In German:
Der Erfinder is nich aus Deutschland daher bringt ihm das nix.
Das Log File is ne .log Datei und liegt im Milkshape verzeichnis.
Und die Debug version is nur da um fehler zu finden. Da wurde sonst nix verändert

From the submission of a couple of the msCMPImporter.log files by people having troubles, I was able to make a new version fixing the problem. I was never able to reproduce the error, but on at least one machine where the error was manifesting, it is now fixed by this change.

I have submitted it to TLR as version 1.0.1.
