Searching for a good joystick

A bud of mine asks me what kind of joystick should he buy? it should be advanced enough for Starlancer, but still compatible with classics such as Freespace 2, and runs without bugs in Win98, and not too pricey. He says he's flirting with "logitech extreme 3d" whatever that is (I don't have much experience in the joystick business).

The joystick that I use is a Saitek ST50.

It has 2 Buttons, is designed for Left or Right Handed people and has Throttle control.

Mine cost me £9.99

here's a pic:

I own the Logitec Extreme 3D USB version, and I have used it with Windows 2000 and later Windows XP. The drivers that came with it worked out of the box and it is very durable. I find that with a one gig athalon and 256 Mb RAM the response is excellent, and it is as responsive as my favorite all time stick, the standard CH Thrustmaster using the standard joystick port. It has six buttons, two axes of movement, a throttle and a hat switch. I find it great for my large hands. I tend to break weak sticks. and the Ex-3D has stood up to my rough handling.

* For the record, I am very hard on sticks. I would break that Saitec in no time. I tried it in the store, all plastic, all weak as crap.

Old Fogey with slow reactions but a love for being pounded in WIng Commander. I hope the B5 conversion happens. SL needs a plot and better looking characters. OK, want your two cents back?

Hey Rosen,
I also have the Logitech Extreme 3D, and anew copy of SL. However, using the most updated drivers from Logitech's website I can't seem to make it work with SL. If you, or anybody else, has some ideas I would really appreciate it.

Here are my system specs, someone might ask, although I don't suspect a problem there:
XP Pro
P4 2.0 Ghz
1.024 GB RDRAM
Nvidia GeForce Ti 4600
Soundblaster Audigy Gamer (EAX disabled in-game)

All drivers are updated and I am using DX 9.0a

Thanks again.
