Anyways, tis true. Somone just making someone else a ship is not an easy task when you are getting nothing for it. They have to spend many many hours doing it. Suggest you find a model you like, then post a piccy saying 'this is really cool dontcha think - anyone feel like trying to make it?' and see what happens. You need to give them something to think about like 'hey i like that, i wanna try it out'. Just putting:

I don't really want to have someone else make a ship for me. I want to do it myself. The problem is finding all the information in one place, and deciphering the information.

An example are ships in the game that have unusable hardpoints. Why put them on the ship model if they can't be used?

So my quest (Trent's downtime between random missions) is to find out how to make unusable hardpoints usuable.

This is the part I would like help with.
