3d image programs. Which one??

hi, just wondered which programs are good for creating new ships with? All suggestions/reccomendations welcome. Many thanks

freeware or cheap
---------------------
- GMAX - FREE - the free version of the proffessional 3dsmax (www.discreet.com) - Good modelling capacities, and relatively easy to use
- Milkshape 3D - SHAREWARE - Difficult modelling
- Doga (very easy to use, but restricted modelling capacities)
- blender - FREE - (http://www.blender3d.com)

Expensive
------------
- 3dsmax (www.discreet.com)
- lightwave (www.lightwave3d.com)
- maya (www.alias.com)
- softimage XSI (www.softimage.com)

in any case you'll need Milkshape 3D (www.milkshape3d.com) cuz it has the only existing exporter for the freelancer CMP format

skyshooter have you tried Gmax? Seems to me that it won't export to anything except specific gmax-supported games; meaning you can't get any model into milkshape from there. Or I might have overlooked something.

yes you can only export with the gamepacks. but, you can download the tempest gamepack (for Quake 3 models) export to md3 format and then import it in milkshape3d, since Milkshape supports md3 files

and no, I don't tried it. I'm a lucky owner of 3dsmax 5.
But I know that someone else did so, and it functions
