HELP!!! Please god help me!!

Ok, after that plea heres my question, im working on a mod for freelancer and its all coming along quite nicly, with 1 tiny draw back, i dont know anyone that knows how to do textures for new models which made me decided il have to do it myself but as i know precisly squat about textures i need tutorials, so basicaly does anyone know how to
1. Make a new Texture from scrath
2. Apply it to a model - so details can be located in the right places ect.
the rest i can do just that bit, so please help poor little me!!!!

take a deep breath Maverick, let it out, repeat.

A/w, (1) You make textures in program like PhotoShop 7. Make the pixel count a mulitple of 8. (eg 256x256, or 512x512) Than make your texture. Save it as a TGA or DDS. You may need to download the appropriate plugin. Consult Kasidia Texturing walkthrough for more on this.

(2) You attach textures in Milkshape. Assign the texture as a Material in the Materials Tab. Select the Part you want texture. (Hopefully you grouped the sections you want textured seperately.) Then click Assign. If it worked, you should be able to see the Material attached in the group tab. To see the texture on the 3D Model switch from Smooth or Flat Shaded to Texture in the right click pop-up menu.

cheers, one other question, any one know any good 3d programs apart from milkshape, that are free?? or that can be easliy "Liberated"??
