how do you use bini

Well, I'm an old mellow guy. I'll try to help you. I ASSUME you are trying to use the command line version of the program. Create a folder on the C: drive that has a simple name, like "X". Then copy the command line version (bini.exe) into that folder. Then copy the INI file you want to uncompress into that folder also. Then open a command prompt and change from the root directory of C: to the folder you created. Like "CD X" if you made a folder named "X". Then type bini filename.ini. Then type "dir" and you should see the original INI file and another file named filename.ini.txt. You edit the ini.txt file and rename it and put it back where it was. It does not have to be recompressed to work.

If you are using the GUI version (1.1 I hope!). It's a lot easier. I read here that there is some kind of bug in it, but I have not had any problems yet. You just open a file and then close it without doing anything else. The act of opening and then closing the file creates the ini.txt file in the same folder where you opened it. Hope this helps.

A note to the "attitude". Some people do not understand what other people write because the English language is a great betrayer. And some people are a bit lazy, but that's people. Not everyone has a programming background as some of us do, and it's nothing to be ashamed of if you are not familiar with editing and hacking. I had to learn once myself and a lot of patient people helped me. I still don't know everything about it, though I used to code in C++, The fact that you are here and trying is good because we want this game to catch on so Microsoft will improve it and add to it.

Thank You Glock 36 Asset Recovery R US

Skinnyrat:

Just click on the disk icon in the wordpad tool bar, and then exit from wordpad.

With the mouse, right click on the .ini.txt file and then click rename. Move your cursor (with the arrow keys) to the point after the i in .ini (before the .txt). Using the Delete key remove the .txt and then hit enter. That's all there is to it.

Wordpad saves out in Unicode (I think). Notepad saves as ASSCI text. ASCCI text is coded internaly (in the computer) without change where as Unicode, RTF,etc, etc are coded (internaly) differently.

Like you I learned the hard way, starting way back with the 8bits. I've forgotten more about computers and programming than I can ever hope to remember, and that's my problem. Some of it comes back now and again, and sometimes I relearn something that helps along the way.

About the GUI bini... there have been meybe three or four posts about suddenly occuring runtime errors and not being able to get the program to work properly again. It could be computer related (maybe yours won't burp), but the only real safe way is good old DOS. You have noticed that the later issues of Windows doesn't call it DOS any more. Now it's refered to as "Command Line".

I dont see any mistakes here is it possible your deleated or misnamed one of the other files by mistake such as goods.ini or st good.ini
Also if your trying to buy the titan at the beginning of the game change the first set of numbers to 0 so no level is required to buy it.
the eagle package is the gf6_package.
it also loods like you figured out how too use biniQDU
"kill them Kill them all"

Post Fri May 02, 2003 5:27 pm

you can use the saved games after the reinstall as long as you edit back in any equipment that was edited then put on your ship before the reinstall.

Post Fri May 02, 2003 8:54 pm

hi,ok i can drag and drop ini file unto bini, this gives me 1 file called market_ships.ini,i then open this wordpad and edit it.i press save, then i remove the original market ini(with cog) from the folder, but i cant see any ships at all then, thanks guys

skinnyrat;

Did you rename the [filenam.ini.txt file to [filenam.ini?

I have a suggestion, if you haven't already done it. Find my step by step posting and print it out so that you have it in your hand to follow.

It's very hard to figure out what you are doing wrong from your posts. It sounds like you are getting excited and skipping something in your haste to see what you've done work.

I think it was Gisgard who commented in this thread that the first thing you should do is take the tutorial material and spend a few hours familarising yourself with the material BEFORE you start hacking away.

From your posts one gets the idea that you read a few lines of the tutorial and then start hacking away, fogetting to read what you're supposed to do next.

Would you tear into your computer to replace the main processor chip without reading the manule to learn how to do it? I think not.

Modding and programming is the same thing only worse, you can't hold code in your hands or see where it fits.

,it juust stays the same, and it doesnt change to the cog, thanks a lot for your help pal,i really appreicate it

Hmmmm...
Well, many of the porbs. on this thread are solved due to my program: Bini Lite (Utilities Download Section).
The last few posts raised a point.
On renameing: Skinnyrat - have you got show all filenames on? Its just that if it hide the flname, it looks like its an ini, but windows (and its patronising ways) has just hidden the .txt extention. Go to File Properties and see if this is the case.

Post Sat May 03, 2003 8:14 am

oh yes, i forgot:

I used to do this: I had the executable of bini.exe in my QuickLaunch.
i would copy it from there -> folder each time i wanted 2 decrypt.
I would drag the ini file onto the executable.

This had a really bad problem though: Because Bini was DOS, it meant that the filenames were shortened :O

A nice side effect was that my program (Bini Lite) seemed to fix this

Just another reason

Oh dear god...

I figured out a HEAPS easier way to do this and i'm a complete n00b at FL modding, This may already of been mentioned but here goes:

1: Make sure that windows isnt hiding file extensions, because that will be very annoying later on

2: Right click on a compressed .ini file and click open with (Depending on your version of windows it could be anywhere...) Down tha bottom on the open with thingo there should be browse or somthing, then select bini from the browse doovalacky but make sure you untick the 'always use this program to open this file' or whatever it is then click ok. after a seccond or two it should make a filename.ini.txt file, this is where you want to see file extensions, just remove the .txt (Or keep the .txt for a backup or somthin) and then edit the file as much as you want

Okay then, thats a lovely first post for a n00b, hope i didnt annoy anyone by prattling on or anything...
