I've seen a few requests for original ship designs, so I figured I'd offer up one my own. This ship has some history behind it. I originally created back in grade school. I'm aware of it's similarity to the Starviper in Battlestar Galactica, but it actually predates the TV show by a year or so (yes, thank you, I know I'm old.) I called the ship "the Comet."
The bottom picture shows the original version. Kind of boxy, but hey, I was a kid. The nice thing about it's sharp angles is that it ought to cut down on the number of polygons if anyone were to want to model it. Let me point out some of it's features:
1. That thing sticking out a little bit under the nose, which appears as a circle in front view, is a heavy cannon. I think the best way to represent it in Freelancer is to use a Kusari Gunboat Large Gun.
2. The landing gear is retractable (only the nose skid is shown.) Given the lack of landing gear in Freelancer, I'd just remove it from the model. For the sake of trivia, the rear landing gear is actually a set of small, retractable tracks housed in the thruster pods at the end of each side wing.
3. Each of the pods on the end of the wings houses a small laser cannon in front, and provides thrust out the rear. I always imagined the thrust looking similar to what the Bretonian or Liberty Rogue ships have. Kind of a "propane torch look." The laser cannons aren't meant to be very powerful. They're used for strafing lightly armored targets when the main cannon is too much.
4. The canopy is supposed to be shaded.
5. The idea of the radiator on the belly of the craft was taken from the P51 Mustang of WW2.
6. This ship is a dedicated fighter. If you look at the size of the pilot, you get an idea of it's scale. It's probably close to the Drake in size. There's little room for cargo. The pilot straddles the main cannon, and everything behind him is engine. The thrust runs through tubes in the wings before being directed out through the pods at the end of each wing. It's capable of atmospheric flight.
7. As boring as it sounds, yes, the back is that flat.
The updated version was more "aerodynamic." A big reason was just to get rid of that flat back end. Here's a run down describing where it differs from the original:
1. The bubble cockpit provides the pilot with a better view. What's not well shown in the picture is that cockpit is actually wider than the fuselage behind it. The back windows actually angle back inward towards the fuseleage.
2. It's more maneuverable, owing to it's shorter length and wide wings.
3. All of it's guns are more powerful.
I'd suggest giving both ships about the same amount of armor, perhaps around 2000. Shield strength might be a 4 or 5. I never planned for them to have mines, missiles, or torpedoes, but it did have chaff (counter measure dropper.) If you can, none of the guns should move physically, as they're supposed to be housed inside the ship, except for the muzzle. Even so, I'd let them shoot at angles they're not pointing at. The game's physics require it. The main gun should shoot straight ahead, with a very limited arc of fire.
The colors are pretty accurate as depicted, but what you see is a much cleaner ship than I ever imagined. The back end of the thrust pods should be covered in soot, as well as the front of the nose, owing to the main gun. The decals shown are completely optional and open to whim. I used the side to display combat medals and enemies killed. You can create your own colorful decals, or leave it all blank. Same goes for the pilot name (shown for example purposes.)
