List Server Problems (And solution)

Okay, I tried to get this bad boy rocking last night and ran into problems right away.

I had all the ports on my router configured properly, and I kept running into the same problem... my server would not contact the master list server so it could be seen.

This ended up being a DNS problem. I figured this out because on both my server and my workstation (that I play from), while they were both configured to use the same DNS server, they were NOT getting the same DNS resolution for the list server.

If you ping fllisterver.zone.msn.com (it denies pings) it will resolve to a specific address. The list server IP has apparently changed recently, and not all DNS caches are updated accordingly.

I fixed this by changing the DNS server entry in the network properties of my server.

If you are having trouble connecting (either for your server or your client) i.e., it doesn't show any internet servers, or your own server is not being displayed, try switching DNS servers.

Southwestern Bells' DNS server (in Chicago I believe) is 151.164.1.7 and .8

AT&Steve's DNS (Chicago as well, I think) is 12.127.17.71 and 12.127.16.67

You can change this under your network places or network neighborhood.

Also, my server here at work was crashing soon after startup... I checked it when I got here, and it is corrupted to beat all hell... it needs a FULL uninstall and reinstall, and I am betting it will work flawlessly... I will report back after I am done redoing it.

Why not just change the list server to an IP instead of using a DNS name? Ya, if they change the IP again you will have issues, but at least you will know why and all you would have to do is get the new IP.
