Short lockups, other issues.

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

Short lockups, other issues.

Athlon XP 2100+ (not overclocked)
Epox 8RDA+ Motherboard
512 meg Kingston DDR333 SDRAM (running as DDR266)
Chaintech Geforce4 TI4200 64meg, 8x AGP
Onboard AC97 sound OR Soundblaster PCI 64
windows 2000 AND Windows XP
Latest Nvidia nforce2 chipset drivers (2.0.3)
Detonator 40.72 (latest WHQL certified driver)
DirectX 9.0

I started out having full out lockups but after much Video driver tweaking I resolved the problem. It was related to my Video card being 'OC'd' by default.

My current problem:
Music is always off.
Full lockups with sound effects on. Let it sit 5 minutes and it is still locked up. I tried adjusting the sound acceleration from full, down to lowest hardware. I never tried running in the lowest (software emulation mode).
Sound effects off, I get short lockups, up to 30 seconds long, usually at the end or after dialogue finished. Sometimes I have then during a trade lane or jump sequence. After the lockup is over the game continues to play normally. The whole PC locks up, not just the game, alt-tab/ctrl-alt-del doesn't respond until the lockup finishes.

I recall having the same type of problems with Sound Effects in Starlancer, under a totally different hardware configuration. This is a newly built system and other games are stable after fixing video issues.

Anyone know a way to resolve this short of turning all sounds off in game? Does the game do captioning if you don't have dialogue sound turned on?

PS A search function is NEEDED badly for these forums

Try the MS support page for FL, there's a link on the TLR main page. I think it has a mention there for the nForce2 Mobo's, not sure.

The only mention of nforce boards is 'update your drivers'. In fact thats pretty much ALL microsoft's website says for all of their games. 'Update your drivers'. With the exception of the honorable mention of 'known video issues' and 'known sound issues', for hardware I don't have. I didn't wanna get a Radeon because they've had a history of driver issues, but it looks like I stepped in something nasty with my Ti4200.

Weird

Try this, clock your AGP to x4 insted of x8. Since you vid doesn't support it, or if it does, the diffrence wont be noticable.

Looks like my video problems have all but disappeared in games after 'underclocking' the board. I will try AGP 4x to see if it helps anything. How well does the game run with DX8.1?

I dont have the game, only the demo.
The game will run with 8.1 only in SP mode, MP needs DX9 to run
