Return the game to place of purchase and demand a refund.

Let me quote right from the EULA:

1. GRANT OF LICENSE

This EULA grants you the following rights:

· Applications Software. For that portion of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT other than the Server Software, you may only install, use, access, display, run, or otherwise interact with (“RUN” one copy of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT, or any prior version for the same operating system, on a single computer, (“COMPUTER”. If not prevented by copy protection technology, the primary user of the COMPUTER on which the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is installed may make a second copy for his or her exclusive use on a portable computer.
· Server Software. You may separately install the Server Software on other computers solely to allow you or others to host Multiplayer Games of Freelancer, provided each user of the Server Software must agree to the terms of this EULA. You will need to have the CD-ROM for the SOFTWARE PRODUCT in your COMPUTER in order to play Freelancer, but not to run the Server Software.
· Reservation of Rights. All rights not expressly granted are reserved by Microsoft.

2. MULTIPLAYER GAMES

· Playing Multiplayer Games. By joining and playing Multiplayer Games, you agree that Microsoft may generate and transmit to the multiplayer server hosting the Multiplayer Game (the “Multiplayer Server” certain information which identifies your COMPUTER to the Multiplayer Server for purposes of account creation, maintenance, and gameplay on the Multiplayer Server. You also agree that the SOFTWARE PRODUCT may continue to transmit to the Multiplayer Server such game information as necessary for multiplayer play. You acknowledge and agree that Multiplayer Games are not hosted by or under the control of Microsoft. You acknowledge and agree that Microsoft has no control over or responsibility for your experience while in Multiplayer Games, or any content or other information or data you may create, encounter or receive—including chat—while you are playing Multiplayer Games.
· Hosting Multiplayer Games. By hosting Multiplayer Games on your server, you agree that Microsoft may generate and store on your server a unique identifier for your server. You further agree Microsoft may collect and disclose your server information necessary for you to host a Multiplayer Game, including the name you have given to your server, your description of your server, and the public Internet Protocol address of your server. Such information will be shown to players wanting to join Multiplayer Games. Information regarding Multiplayer Games in progress will also be stored on your server to allow continuation of Multiplayer Games. You acknowledge and agree that Microsoft has no control over or responsibility for your experience while hosting Multiplayer Games, or any content or other information or data you may create, encounter or receive—including chat—while you are hosting Multiplayer Games.

This means you can use the Client software one time. You made no mention of a secondary portable computer in your original post. The problem appears to be the ID in your case. Sorry, but the EULA is what it is.

I'm the friend, anyways, this comp is now using the ID generated by the other, since this one refuses to generate one of it's own. Where in the EULA does it specify that my computer isn't supposed to generate an account ID? If anything it should be the first comp I installed on that should've generated it, presuming it was due to anti-piracy and whatnot.

The system in question wouldn't happen to be running WindowsME would it?

And about that EULA if he wanted to uninstall the game and use it on the other computer he can, it sounds like a bug that it won't generate an ID, it has nothing to do with it being installed twice.

Unfortunately yes, this system is running Windows ME, however so is the other one, which generates the ID just fine.

Edit: before people mention it, yes, I've already reinstalled the game, a couple times.

I have the same problem. All I did was reinstall the game one time. It really sux that I can't play online.

A Fremen dies when he's too long from the desert. This we call the water sickness.

*throws a stick and bumps*
Please, I'd really like to fix this.

When it isn't generating an account ID, what is it doing?

Post Fri Mar 07, 2003 10:51 pm

I had the same problem in Windows 98 SE. But my system is dual boot, so I executed the game in Windows XP, got that key and entered it in 98 SE. Now it works. The bug seems to be related to 9x.

BTW,I'm using Windows 98 SE to play because I don't want to install DX9 in Windows XP, people seem to have too much problem with it. Also FL seem to use DX9 only for some sound effects and direct play (network code).

Oh, btw you could use the key from your an other computer (if no one is using it to play). Remember, these key seem to be somewhat randomly generated and are used to identifie your savegames on servers, so you don't want to share a key...

As for returning the game, if you're like me and you live in Canada, you're screwed, you can't return open boxes because you might have used the occasion to copy the game !

If you already have been in a MP game on someone's server (you have been playing, needed to reformat), is there any way to get the ID from the server?
