weird text? looks like programming language

in al the text boxes throughtout the game and some menu buttons, there is wierd text that looks like programming language. what gives? this happened in the demo for me as well.

does nobody else have this problem? I just tried to play multiplayer- but the server selection screen is unreadable. its nothing but this= "text">html,blah, blah.

In the demo executable (open it with winzip) and on the retail CD, there's a msxml...something or another.exe. Double click that, might fix it.

The text resources for alot of the ingame text is stored as XML - a total waste of space in my opinion, WTF is wrong with plain text?!

Post Thu Mar 06, 2003 2:49 pm

yeah i dont get it either. and it seems they even foresaw probelms with it. because they included the msxml.exe file.. ah well the ways of DA are not for us mortals to understand

OK- i tried installing the xml parser - still no luck!! what the hell is wrong with this game!!@!#%#$

What video card do you have? I've heard that some ATI cards have distorted text because of a driver problem (why am I not surprised? )

Well, comparing XML to plain text is like comparing loose paper collections to a library.

With plain text you do not have any kind of structure. And please don't tell me now that giving headlines to sections can be called a structure ;-))))

SInce the information stored belongs to something XML makes it really easy to modify the data, rearrange it, restructure it, build relational databases with it etc.

XML has various enormous positive side effects and is in no sense a waste of space when it comes to storing structured data in a human readable form.

I have a geforce3. its not distorted- I'm actually seeing the commands or something for the xml text and the text itself.

I'm having the same problems. I've checked for registry entries regarding the XML Parser. Also, even though the game comes with Parser 3, I've upgraded to Parser 4, but that still doesn't fix it. I've contacted MS Tech support, but will probably have to deal with a guy reading a book on standard answers before I get someone knowledgable. I'll be sure to pass anything I learn back here.

Look on your install CD and go to the redist folder.
Run MSXML3.MSI

If that does not fix you lemme know.

Cheers!

I've done everthing imaginable except for reformating and reinstalling everything!! MS tech suppport is elevating the issue for my problem and is calling me tommorrow with possible fixes

Post Fri Mar 14, 2003 5:17 pm

I'd be keen to hear what they come up with and what the cause was. When you get a resolution please take a minute and jot me a note at [email protected] or you can post it here.

I don't get in here too often as we're working on Brute Force now so email is the best way to catch me.

Thanks!

I am having weird text problems of my own: most of the text is blank (especially on buttons), or flickers in every few seconds, for just a frame. I am running on the SiS chip model 730 (of the 630/730 family) in Windows 2000 Professional, and have up-to-date drivers , sufficient video memory, processor power, and all, but that solved nothing. I played with the card performance slider just a bit, and nothing was truly different. Additionally, I get eyeballs and throats rendered outside of people's bodies in the bar conversation scenes. It's almost like the z-buffer is getting scattered. Other 3D software games do not exhibit this problem, but this is my first step into DirectX 9.

I noted there is a file called: flconfigdatabase.txt in the Freelancer/EXE dir (this is the demo version)

And the SiS entry is:

///////////////////////////////////////////////////
//
// SiS
//
//////////////////////////////////////////////////

Vendor = 0x1039 "SiS"

0x0204 = "6215"
0x0205 = "6205"
0x0305 = "305"
break
0x0315 = "315"
0x0325 = "315"
if os < win2k
if driver < 4.13.01.3030
UnsupportedDriver
endif
endif
break

0x6306 = "530"
TextureOffset
break

0x6326 = "6326"
break

0x6325 = "650"

0x0330 = "Xabre 330"
break

unknown = "**UNIDENTIFIED**"
UnknownHardware
break

I was wondering if there was something I could adjust in this file to repair these problems. The top of this file sure suggested a lot of options to solve issues like this. Based on the symptoms, can you suggest an approach? I'd love to buy the title (need my next job first) if these display issues can be resolved.

Frontier: Elite II, Always wanted it multiplayer; thanks, Microsoft[!

I had the same problem (xml language in the game text).
reinstalling windows xp, solved the problem.
Seems drastic, but it was worth it
