Simply does not play at all

Whenever I start the game, it loads, does the opening cinematic, then when I see "Freelancer" it crashes. This game used to work just fine on my system, and I haven't changed ANYTHING on it, apart from getting a new monitor and downloading a few new programs here and there. I already know that my problem is not the firewall or the anti-virus, I keep my computer defragged and all that good stuff, and I've already tried un-and reinstalling the game, so don't waste your time with those "solutions." Is there any way to stop these instant CTD's?

remove the old savegames ... very likely it will work then

Actually, my hard drive was screwy anyway so I reformatted. Now it works.

But what I was saying was that the game on first loading did that. It'd start up, go to "Freelancer" and CTD. appreciate that you're trying to help. I'm thinking the culprit was something I downloaded, maybe from Microsoft that didn't agree with my computer.
