Freelancer wont run!!

Please help!

Just got a new PC. Bought Freelancer as loved Starlancer & it was £10!!

Installed it, went to play it. Freelancer screen comes up in Windows. Then an error message "Invalid page fault". Looked around, cleaned up some "errors" but still no joy.

Machine is AMD Sempron 2700 & graphics card is ATI Raedon 8500. My mate thinks it may be the proccessor being incompatible, but any help/suggestions welcome.

I'd check the usual suspects- video card driver, DirectX, sound driver, viruses, etc.

Page Faults seem to be a curse. My little bro got the blue screen of death ONCE. Guess what? "A page fault occured in a non-paged area". WTF?!

The machine is virgin. Direct X is the same or higher that came on the disk (this was one of the first things I checked!!). It's never been connected to the Internet nor had anything other than software manufacturers disks in it. All it has on is Win 98, Neverwinter + the 2 expansions & Freelancer.

After I tried Freelancer I installed & ran perfectly WH40k Dawn of War, so I think the gfx & s-card are good. My only hope is the machine will not currently play WMF videos, of which the intro is one, so I have procured an update to fix that. I'll let you know how it goes.

Well, Media player didn't help. An It mate tells me page faults are tied to IE, so I'll try upgrading this, as I have the ver 98 shipped with.

I now know it isn't hardware as I tried it on a totally different machine, with the same ver & patches (i.e. none!) of Win 98 and got the same problem. Will keep you posted.
