Game crashes to desktop after short time

After a short but apparently random period of playing time, and at some point while in space, the game will abruptly dump me on the desktop without an error message of any kind. Often, the game will continue to run for a few seconds after I'm on the desktop - the music from it still plays - but I can't switch back to the game and it inevitably closes then. Sometimes it crashes my entire system at that point.

Does anyone know of any potential causes to this, and the solutions to each?

Are you running any, or have run any, mods at all?

Try a reinstall - check your graphics cards drivers are the most recent, check your Direct X installation is the most recent (or 9.0b will suffice!), remove all background software that maybe running un-necessarily, scan drives with Spybot and Adaware, use your virus scanner, check sound cards drivers are up to date, and reinstall the game!

Think that is nearly everything you should try out for starters

Alright... Did all that, no go. But, I reinstalled the drivers on my motherboard. Suddenly, the space parts work fine! But now it crashes randomly during conversations or buying screens on planet. >.<

I had a similar problem. I think it has to do with another program running while FL is in action, minimising it. It could be an automatic virus scan, something checking for updates, one of an infinate number of possible applications. Try to see if something else it trying to run when your FL crashes, use ctrl+alt+delete to check what is running. --- VH16

Actually, when Freelancer opens, a whole slew of other programs open automatically at the same time. I can't figure out why. Closing them makes it take longer before it crashes, but they reopen again. Is there a solution to this?

But, I think it's worth mentioning right about now...
I reformatted and removed every program and reinstalled Windows fresh on a different hard drive, reinstalled and updated all my drivers, then reinstalled Freelancer...
I now can't get past the first movie on the storyline! >_<

Get you a spy sweeper program and run it. Sound like you got a few bugs if programs open themselves up. There are a few free ones you can run. Ad-aware 6 personal is free at www.lavasoft.de download it and run it to see wht you have on board.

Hmm - sounds like its not FL thats causing you problems at all - but your computer itself.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I've figured out the problem. It's my video card.

I already use Ad-Aware, it doesn't find anything - it really looks like FreeLancer itself is opening those programs.
