Some help urgently needed

<SebReSpawN> The problem: In the beginning of the game (the bar), I cannot do anything or else the picture will get corrupted and DirectX will fail to draw. Sometimes it even reboots my computer and then Windows displays a dialog which says "Windows has recovered from a serious error". Since I can play OpenGL games on my computer without any errors or problems what so ever, I suspect that it is something wrong with DirectX.
My computer: Intel Pentium 4 2.5GHz, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB HDD and a GeForce4 MX 440 (with the latest drivers).
I also have the latest DirectX version.
My OS: Windows XP Professional with SP1 (and all additional updates available).

Help please

Are you starting in SP? Are you running any Mods? Or Hacks? Have you changed any of the missions files or even the npc and character files?

Asking these questions because, so far, your spec's don't imply anything obviously wrong.

No, no mods, no hacks or no additional files. Just a clean FL installation.

Direct X 9.0b, right?

<Edit>

Clean FL.... you mean you've deleted the FL game folder and reinstalled? Also,
you've deleted all of your prior FL game files or moved them out of the My Games\Freelancer\Accounts folder?

I have tried:

-DirectX 9.0b
-DirectX 9.0c

-The latest graphics drivers
-Deleted the FL folder and reinstalled

And I even reformatted my computer and tried all the latest stuff which should work with FL, but it still fails to draw when the actual game begins. Since I can play OpenGL games, I don't think it's something wrong with my graphics card.

/me is desperate...

OK.

Really stupid question. Did FL ever work for you on your PC?

Post Tue Aug 10, 2004 8:57 am

Yes, FL did work on my computer, before I started playing HL (which was for about a year ago (or more)). I can't remember what OS' I used, but I think it was Windows XP.

BTW, I want to go to the bottom of this problem since I don't want to spend 210 USD on buying a new graphics card.

Edit: I updated my XP to SP2 today (I will try FL out and see if it might work).

Oh. SP2? Hope it helps. Be advised, though, that it has been indicated at some sites that SP2 is less game friendly.

What Indy means is that *I* have been bad-mouthing SP2 since day one . In fact, it is believed to "break" applications because they do not meet the new security requirements (or something along those lines). Beware!

Atchly Esqy, its been written up that way as well in reviews like PC Today and CPU so you are not a singular authority on this issue.

More to the point though is how it comes to pass that FL worked once, and even with an intervening install of HL, it won't work again after a reformat of the HDD.

@Seb

Did you reinstall HL as well after you reformatted?

I know Indy, I was just having some fun. Thanks for ruining it .

Post Tue Aug 10, 2004 11:57 pm

@Indy: Nope, I had no game except FL on the system after the reformat. The system was secure with NSW 2004 Professional running, all needed drivers, all additional updates and SP1 and no additional applications that might change the hardware settings or similar.

BTW, my system is the same as before (NSW 2004 Professional, all needed drivers, all additional updates and SP1), but it still won't work properly. I managed to get the game working 50% yesterday. Everytime the graphics failed to draw (but the game was still running as I heard the sound), I waited until the graphics came back again (20-30 seconds) and managed to play my way through that. However, I would not like to play this way (wait for the failing graphics to come). My system rebooted yesterday when I had played myself to level 2 (I think the computer was overheated, but not sure). This problem I have can be an easy one or a hard one. I would go for that hard one as I have tried almost everything.

@Esquilax: LOL.

Hold on. Geforce MX 440. Very interesting. Earlier someone else had a similarish problem with the latest nVidia driver and a GeForce 2, Getting washed out graphics and stuff.

I am wondering whether the latest nVidia drivers are too beefy for less than
GeForce 5 gpus when the game graphics are set high.

@Seb: Stupid Question #2. Have you tried to play with all graphics set to minimums?

When FL worked the last time, was it with the current nVidia drivers or an older set?

Try the drivers that came with your card. The newer "Detonator" drivers don't work very well with FL by all reports.
